Video games have always made a perfect Christmas gifts. We all can remember waking up on Christmas morning and excitedly opening up the hottest new game of the season or the newest console only to spend our Christmas day playing them all day long. But what about games that are about or set on Christmas? There are a few, but there could always be more. Here are a few videogame series I think could tackle some kind of holiday story or even just some bonus content for the season.
Spyro
Fans were hoping to see a revival of the Spyro series after 2018’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy, but we still haven’t seen one. There hasn’t been a main series Spyro game since the Legend of Spyro trilogy ended with Dawn of the Dragon in 2008, but a Holiday adventure starring everyone’s favorite purple dragon might be just the thing. Spyro has been through his fair share of icy levels and even possesses ice breath so a game set during the winter with him saving Christmas from a winter wizard or an abominable snowman wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. We could even see a crossover with Sony’s other old-school mascot Crash Bandicoot to bring back the nostalgia with some co-op fun or maybe even get his fellows Skylanders involved
Mario
Mario has raced karts, thrown parties, even been a doctor (and Luigi hunted ghosts), but its kind of a surprise he hasn’t tackled the holiday season. I would love to see him team up with Santa to deliver presents.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Who better to help Santa deliver presents than a super-speedy hedgehog. Plus Dr. Robotnik kind of looks like he could fill in for Santa if it called for it. What about Shadow the Red-nosed Hedgehog anyone?
Destroy all Humans!
Aside from some stellar remasters of the first two games the Destroy all Humans! Franchise has remained largely dormant since 2008 with Path of the Furon. The series has already dabbled a little bit with holiday-themed Winter Skins, but what about a full-fledged bonus level where you try and abduct Santa Claus or even a full game entitled “Crypto Saves the Holidays”. The Santa vs aliens thing has been done with films such as Santa Conquers the Martians
but I think Destroy all Humans! Could put an unique spin on the whole holiday story angle. I for one would love to see what a Grinch and Crypto team-up might entail
Ratchet and Clank
This one maybe the most far-fetched as the Playstation series is mostly space-based, but if Star Wars can do a holiday special despite being set in a galaxy far, far away(ok, maybe bad example) then why can’t the two Playstation mascots have a holiday adventure?
Call of Duty
Call of Duty has tackled some holiday content, mostly by adding snow to popular levels and renaming them and It might be a bit much to ask for a whole Call of Duty: Christmas Warfare game, but what about a bonus level set at either Nakotomi Plaza from Die Hard or the North Pole or even a special holiday weapon like a candy cane launcher or the Red Ryder BB gun from A Christmas Story
Madden
This one is a little far-fetched, but a football game at the North Pole during a snowstorm would be just the kind of fun Christmas DLC that would be unexpected but also very fun. Also maybe a Santa Claus skin?
GTA
A whole Grand Theft Auto game set at the North Pole? Probably not, but what about a side mission where you have to steal Santa’s sleigh
Mortal Kombat
Another somewhat far-fetched idea, but Mortal Kombat has had many guests characters in recent years, why not add Santa or even Krampus to the mix. It may be hard justifying a gory Santa, but plenty of horror movies do it, so why not a video game. The animality could be a reindeer? Better yet give us a full-fledged fighting game from Netherealm featuring all the iconic Christmas characters from Santa, to Jack Frost, to Frosty to even the Grinch if possible.
Those are just a few ideas for some holiday themed games. What holiday games would you like to see? Let us know in the comments.
