The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Reaction
I never thought that I would live in a world where we would get good adaptations of video games, but here we are. Sega and Paramount have been crushing it with their Sonic movies. Fallout broke barriers with its Amazon Prime series. And two years ago, Illumination and Nintendo gave us the amazing Super Mario Bros Movie, with plans for sequels already in the works. This coming April, that sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, will grace our screens, and we now have our first trailer!
Bowser is the same as ever!
If you recall from the end of the first movie, Mario and Luigi saved the Mushroom Kingdom (and Brooklyn) from Bowser. Peach punished the King of Koopas by feeding him a mini mushroom, turning him tiny, harmless, and trapped in a jar in her castle. He’s been stuck that way ever since, so either the power-down doesn’t have a time limit, or Peach and Toad have been feeding him mini mushrooms as punishment. Either way, the trailer shows he’s stuck like that.
Now, Bowser does try his best to try and convince the Brothers that he’s gotten over his anger, and while Luigi plays good cop, Mario gets him to crash out by mocking his painting. Speaking of which, a lot of people have commented how the scene where Bowser shows his art will likely become a meme template, and I am all for it. Too bad for Bowser, he can’t help but let his obsession with Peach blend into his creations. So, no freedom!
But enough about Bowser. What the fans are really interested in is the plot of the movie. And based on what we see, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will have fans eating good!
Super Mario Galaxy is Alive and Well
Based on the trailer, the film will be largely taking inspiration from the games of the same name, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Released in 2007 and 2010 on the Wii, the games would see Mario travel across the cosmos to rescue not only Peach from Bowser, but also these star beings called Lumas that can create planets. We actually met one of them in the form of that blue one that was held prisoner by Bowser in the first film. More importantly, though, the final portion of the trailer reveals that the film will be including none other than Princess Rosalina.
Introduced in the first Super Mario Galaxy, Princess Rosalina is the leader and adoptive mother of the Lumas. From her home in the Cosmic Observatory, she watches over them and keeps them safe, frequently helping Mario throughout the game and serving as a celestial counterpart to Peach. She proved to be a very popular character, as she’s managed to make her way into Mario Kart as well as join the roster for Super Smash Bros. And it’s been confirmed that in the upcoming movie, she will be voiced by Brie Larson.
As an aside, I’m well aware of how some Mario fans have objected to the first film’s use of celebrity voice actors. I’m also aware that some would like nothing more than to see the VA’s from the game play their roles. That being said, I don’t mind it that much. Jack Black managed to absolutely slay as Bowser, and while I was skeptical on Chris Pratt as Mario, I eventually came around to the idea. I say we give Brie Larson a chance.
Plus, she’s not the only familiar character making her debut. We’re getting Bowser Jr.
Bowder Jr is Coming!
Introduced in the 2002 video game Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr is the son of Bowser and heir to the Koopa Kingdom. Like a lot of kids, he’s hyperactive, mischevious, and loves to cause trouble, and he’s good at it. His first game had him vandalize a tropical island with a magic paintbrush and frame Mario for it, forcing the plumber to clean up the mess. Literally! He’s since been a recurring frenemy to Mario and Luigi, doing his best to make his dad proud. Surprisingly, Bowser and Jr have a very loving relationship, something that the film seems to carry over, as we see Junior ready to fight the Brothers to rescue his dad. Say what you want, but Bowser can be a good parent.
This trailer didn’t give away much in the way of plot, but regardless, it’s got me pumped for the movie. Nintendo has gotten a lot of flak lately for some of their business practices, but if this film does well, maybe people will cut them some slack. Or maybe they won’t. Either way, I’m gonna enjoy seeing this in theaters.
