The King of the Monsters has claimed that titled because he has earned it. Godzilla stands above all once the dust settles. Monsters, aliens, mutants, and robots have all tried to take out the king, but Godzilla is the one that unleashes the victorious roar. Some have made him bled and retreat but Godzilla is the one at the end of the fight that stands. Efforts in his universe have tried to slow and take him down but his power is too great. Perhaps so great that his power cannot be contained to a world of monsters. The last several years, stories have seen Godzilla take on a large array of foes. These new enemies have often been outside of his established universe. Many of them are just as iconic as Godzilla. These matchups are not only entertaining to see but are the dreams of young kids come alive. These are amusing crossovers. Also begs the question, why does Godzilla have so much beef with everyone?
Of course, one of the iconic characters that Godzilla has intense rivalry with is King Kong. This rivalry began decades ago when the two titanic characters first clashed in King Kong vs. Godzilla. It persisted for generations and finally got new life with Godzilla vs. Kong. Continued with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and will continue with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. And for these two, it’s nearly on sight. When one sees the other, it immediately gets straight to fighting. Godzilla’s role as the protector and order of nature puts him on a collision course with Kong because Kong has all the attributes to become an Alpha Titan just like Godzilla. And with Kong’s pride to fend for himself and defend others, he does not back down from Godzilla. Role and pride are the driving forces for the two and constantly put them at odds with some exceptions. Kong stands his ground and does put up a hell of a fight each time, but Godzilla proves every time why HE is the King of the Monsters.
Before the more recent fights, there was another clash that was on a Godly level. Godzilla once came face to face with the Greek Pantheon. He blitzed to Mt. Olympus and during that charge, he did a speed run through some of the more prominent Gods. Since Godzilla was making his way through the seas, a clash with Poseidon was inevitable. The god of the seas tried to stop Godzilla but was no match for Godzilla’s raw power. Then Ares, the God of War, attempted to destroy Godzilla. But with one blast of his atomic breath, Ares was disintegrated. The Hydra was then next in line but like every other giant monster that fought Godzilla, the hydra fell. Then came the clash; the King of Gods vs the King of Monsters. Godzilla pushed Zeus to the extreme but Zeus was the victor. But it came at a cost. Zeus lost his power so even in defeat Godzilla makes certain his foes pay the price.
The current one is Godzilla taking on the Avengers. He rampages across different cities and kingdoms which puts him on the Avengers’ notice. It soon becomes an all-hands-on-deck situation. Heroes come together to stop the King. But along the way, Godzilla gets a warm Marvel welcome. He got a few upgrades with one making him the most powerful version he has ever been. A symbiote latched onto Godzilla, giving the King of the Monsters the physical attributes that host receive; the long tongue, a horde of sharp teeth and exaggerated body parts, in Godzilla’s case, his spikes. He then got an armored upgrade. Some Stark Tech over his body made him Iron Godzilla that has a lot of shared attributes from the MechaGodzilla version from the 1990’s. Godzilla’s most powerful upgrade was when he received the Power Cosmic. This put his already immense power on a different level. Instead of being one of the most powerful on Earth, he instantly was made into one of the most powerful ones in the universe. The King even got the powers of the Ghost Rider. Godzilla definitely benefited from being on a collision course with Earth’s mightiest Heroes.
Arguably the most epic one was when Godzilla was dropped on an alternative Earth where he instantly had a bout with Superman. Because of the bold ambitions of the Legion of Doom, they were desperate enough to try any course of action to take out the Justice League. One plan of theirs fell through and the mistake they made brought monsters from the Monsterverse on a collision course with the Justice League. Godzilla almost immediately put Superman in a coma that came close to killing the Man of Steel. One blast of Godzilla’s nuclear breath did the job. From there, members of the Justice League crossed paths with Kong, Scylla, Behemoth, and Tiamat. Godzilla even had a fight with Aquaman’s last resort to defend Atlantis; the famous Kraken. The Justice League were in a mad scramble to stop and send the monsters home to which they did. But Godzilla left an impression on Superman. The fight between Godzilla and the Justice League was so epic, round two is already being written.
An upcoming collision with the King of Monsters will have him battle the Heroes in a Half Shell. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be the next ones to test their might against Godzilla. With rich history of mutants and the brothers fighting monsters themselves, fans could already speculate how the fight could happen. Some mutated allies could very well join them in their attempt to stop Godzilla’s rampage through New York. And with Shredder hell bent on destroying the brothers, he could also try to get Godzilla to fight them. Fans would have to wait a bit to see this fight however but both fan bases should have a field day when it releases.
One fight that just makes sense is his battle with the Power Rangers. Every Power Ranger fan knows that each Ranger has their own Zord, giant mechanical robots. And when the threat literally gets too big, to Kaiju proportions, they form a singular Megazord. A perfect formula for an enemy of Godzilla. It was a match that looked good at all levels and it finally manifested.
A question does get brought up to why does Godzilla get into these fights? The answer is simple; he’s an uber popular character. He’s iconic. Godzilla is up there with all the other iconic characters throughout the history of storytelling. Godzilla is not just a popular character in cinema, or fiction or storytelling but simply iconic. People tend to overlook that because he may come off as a gimmick character because he’s a giant monster. But Godzilla ranks high in popularity. And other franchises not only realize that but want to be a part of it, use for mutual benefits. The reason why Godzilla has beef with everyone is that everyone else realize how important of a character he is.
Who doesn’t like a good Godzilla movie?
This has been quite the array of crossover fights though.
Since you bring up the possibility of Godzilla getting in scrapes outside of his own cinematic universe, I would like to suggest Gamera.
Gamera from Toho studios Tokyo, has been fighting kaijus from outer space since 1965.
You mention Godzilla going toe to toe with TMNT, but Gamera was the original Hero in a Half Shell.
Godzilla Vs. Gamera
Now that’s a fight that been brewing for 60 years!
