Coming soon to a streaming device near you… The Mighty Nein!
At the 2025 San Diego Comic Con, the cast of Critical Role appeared to talk about the upcoming show that adapts their second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, a campaign that started all the way back on January 11th, 2018, The Mighty Nein. The Mighty Nein is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on November 19th of this year, and the panels and interviews taking place throughout the course of SDCC have given us some new insight and exciting tidbits about what is in store for us, as well as our first sneak peek of the show itself (which you can find here).
But before we get into it, what is The Mighty Nein? Here’s a brief introduction for those of us who haven’t been following Critical Role for the past seven years (myself included).
The Mighty Nein takes place in Exandria, the same world as The Legend of Vox Machina, Critical Role’s other campaign adapted by Amazon Prime Video, 20 years later. Campaign 2 is the polar opposite of Vox Machina. We are introduced to seven individuals, loners who have happened upon each other by chance, who must learn to work together and trust each other along the way. After becoming the suspects of a violent attack at a carnival in Trostenwald, a tentative alliance is struck as they work together to clear their names.
They are forced together by chance. But it is within each other that they are able to succeed, as long as they are able to put their solitary pasts behind them and learn to work together as a team.
Meet the Characters

Meet Beau, a cobalt soul monk with a dislike of authority figures. Beau is played by Marisha Ray.

Meet Caleb, a reserved wizard with a pension for fire magic and running from his past. Caleb is played by Liam O’Brien.

Meet Fjord, a half-orc, warlock/paladin with a strong honor code and a habit of throwing himself in harm’s way to save others. Fjord is played by Travis Willingham.

Meet Jester, a tiefling cleric of the Traveler who delights in small acts of mischief and trickery. Jester is played by Laura Bailey.

Meet Molly, a tiefling blood hunter with a thirst for life and a past they cannot, and have no desire to, remember. Molly is played by Taleisin Jaff.

Meet Nott, a foul-mouthed goblin girl with kleptomaniacal tendencies and a secret best kept by hiding in the shadows. Nott is played by Sam Riegel.

Meet Yasha, a fallen aasimar barbarian who knows how to kill you with her greatsword in fifty ways and likes to collect flowers. Yasha is played by Ashley Johnson.
What is in store for The Mighty Nein?
If you have been following Critical Role for a while, then you probably have a good idea of what is in store, but I wouldn’t get too comfortable.
One of the benefits of getting a TV show adaption is the opportunity to change things, and while Critical Role would never compromise their original campaign and their journey together, they have certainly hinted at some changes to what we can expect to see. During Campaign 2, there were a lot of scheduling issues. For one, Travis and Laura had their baby, but it was Ashley who ran into the most issues, resulting in having to weave Yasha in and out of the story.
During an interview with the Character Sheet on ComicBook.com, Ashley spoke about doing a little dunamancy themselves and revisiting the story to make Yasha’s journey make more sense. Ashley says, “once she’s in, she’s there.” She is incredibly happy with the changes they were able to make and having the unique opportunity to see what could have happened if she had been able to be at the table during the whole campaign.
Matt Mercer says in an interview with IGN that they were interested in experimenting with the things they could make better now in hindsight of the completion of the campaign and the experience that have gained since. Critical Role is not interested in playing it safe when it comes to making changes and are excited to see their fans’ reactions.
This leads to the question of Molly. If members of Critical Role are revisiting the narrative, will there be any changes to Molly’s fate? While Taleisin hasn’t indicated that Molly’s story will end in a different way, we will definitely get to see more of it. He says that Molly’s story will hit all the points we will expect, but also some that he was sad that they didn’t have enough time to fully explore during the original play. So maybe not the answer you were hoping for, but Taleisin is excited to share more of his character with the audience.
The Mighty Nein in a sentence
During Critical Role’s interview with IGN to discuss the reveals from the SDCC panel, each member was asked to describe The Mighty Nein in a single sentence to give the audience a taste of what is to come. Here’s what they had to say.
“Next level magic in mages that you wouldn’t believe.” -Marisha Ray
“Peeling back secrets lead to more secrets, and then secrets.” -Travis Willingham
“You will cry, you will laugh and you will cry with laughter. It is funny in all the right ways and sad in all the worst.” -Sam Riegel
“Traumatic bonding.” -Ashley Johnson
“It’s a story about a group of lost souls finding a way to come together.” -Laura Bailey
“Broken people putting themselves back together, together, while discovering that they can have a larger impact in a dangerous world than they can expect.” -Mathew Mercer
“Some people will start a whole ass war rather than go to therapy.” -Liam O’Brien
“Watching people who are living small lives being swept away by the tide of history and doing their best.” -Taleisen Jaff
Get ready for the Might Nein! … or the Sensuous Seven?
November 19th seems a ways away, especially when there is so much to look forward to, including full hour long episodes, giving us even more time to see all the ways the show can kill off a character voiced by the one and only Matt Mercer (the animation team, apparently, likes to sneak them in).
In the meantime, you can binge The Legend of Vox Machine, also available on Amazon Prime Video. Three seasons are currently out and the fourth is on its way, with a predicted release date in 2026. You can find the sneak peek for Season 4 here.
good ideas thanks for this
