The name of the game, Doom, always pops up everywhere. It’s a classic series that revolutionised the first-person shooting genre. A few days ago, Doom: The Dark Ages was released, maintaining the high quality of the previous two modern titles. I have spent hours completing this game, and I wish I could forget and experience it once more.
My Review: Breakdown
I love first-person shooters, games, and Doom excels in this genre. I enjoyed tearing apart different enemy types, and the satisfaction of the shooting remains, only it’s much better than the previous title, Doom Eternal. So, taking a break from playing poker for Doom was worth it.
Robust Campaign
It took me over 20 hours to complete the campaign. I must say, it was a thrilling experience. Moreover, I believe it has the most robust story in the series. Apart from dealing with the hordes from hell, the lore and the story make the game better, as it finally gave me an insight into the Doomslayer. It really felt like I was battling alongside humanity to repel the invasion of hell. Moreover, the addition of more dialogue and characters in this game truly makes it phenomenal.
Satisfying Gameplay
Doom Dark Ages differs from the other series, featuring a new Slayer Shield. I loved using the new Shield’s ability, and it was terrific. In the previous games, I had to avoid enemies’ attacks to defend constantly. However, the shield is a complete game changer, as I can take the enemy more head-on, keeping my adrenaline at its fullest. I could deflect and block enemy attacks, but it’s not overpowered since it depletes its energy.
Using the shield in the highest difficulty was still valuable and helped me in my hardcore playthrough. It doesn’t end here, as you can toss the shield and take out a group of enemies. Moreover, it’s a scene to witness.
Immersive Environment
When I played Doom Dark Ages, I felt immersed in the environment. The battles were massive, and it felt like an all-out war. Additionally, the scenes were ferocious, much more ruthless than the previous modern titles. There are both minor and major levels, and both feel great. Personally, I loved the massive levels. The developers went all out with their talent with this game.
Mecha Battles and Slayer Dragon
The addition of flying with your dragon and fighting colossal enemies redefined the gameplay of Doom. The game features specific sections where you must fly and utilise the mecha. I prefer the mecha battles because I wanted to use those mecha when I saw them in the previous titles.
Moreover, using the mecha and the dragon is great. It’s smooth and works as intended. However, the flying sections may get tedious as they are easy to mess up. Yet, after getting used to the control, it was not an issue.
Stellar Soundtrack
I always loved the soundtrack of Doom, and in the new game, it did not disappoint me. Even though Mick Gordon did not work on the soundtrack, it still had that Doom feeling. The heavy metal music fit perfectly as I was slaying enemies relentlessly, and it kept pumping my adrenaline. When it was getting late, the soundtrack whispered to me not to sleep as the adrenaline kept me playing.
Final Note
In conclusion, Doom: The Dark Ages is the perfect prequel one could ask for. I cannot find a single component to complain about, as the developers have managed to create an ideal game, which is rare in this era. Moreover, adding a stronger narrative story was the one thing Doom lacked, but the release of The Dark Ages changed that. Also, if you are a big fan of the Doom series, you can get some amazing merchandise. To conclude, I have only one more thing to say, ‘Rip and Tear.’
Im Prinzip heißt es: Du bist der Slayer, du stürzt dich in einen Krieg gegen die Horden der Hölle – diesmal im Stil eines dunklen Mittelalters.
Unlike previous entries set in futuristic sci-fi environments, Doom The Dark Ages anchors the Slayer in an ancient world of stone citadels, demonic hordes, gothic cathedrals, and colossal monsters
