As spring blossoms unfold across the Northern Hemisphere, Tokyo-based indie developer FantaJI Games has announced their touching visual novel “Hanako’s Flower Shop” will be launching on Steam this April. This heartwarming tale combines flower shop management with a deep narrative about legacy, personal growth, and the power of human connection.

The game follows Hanako, a young woman who takes over her grandfather’s renowned flower shop. Players will guide her through the delicate balance of honoring her grandfather’s legacy while discovering her own path in life. As a master florist known for his exceptional skill and compassion, Hanako’s grandfather has left behind big shoes to fill, leading her to question whether she can truly live up to his sterling reputation.

At its core, “Hanako’s Flower Shop” is more than just a visual novel – it’s an intricate blend of storytelling and game mechanics that revolves around the ancient art of hanakotoba, the Japanese language of flowers. Players will craft meaningful bouquets using a unique system where each flower carries symbolic weight. Whether it’s expressing love through red roses, conveying modesty with white lilies, or acknowledging regret with amaryllis, every floral choice impacts both the story and the lives of the characters.

The game features a rich, non-linear narrative where players’ decisions actively shape Hanako’s journey. Through building relationships and uncovering secrets, players will help determine how Hanako develops both as a florist and as an individual. The story unfolds through interactions with a diverse cast of townspeople, from eccentric artists to shy teenagers, each bringing their own unique stories and challenges to Hanako’s shop.

Behind this touching narrative lies an equally compelling development story. FantaJI Games is primarily the work of solo developer Vsevolod Metelsky, originally from Ukraine. The game has been in development since 2019 but faced significant challenges due to the war in Ukraine, which forced Metelsky to relocate to Tokyo, Japan.

Speaking about the upcoming release, Metelsky shared his emotional connection to the project: “Getting ‘Hanako’s Flower Shop’ so close to release is both exhilarating and daunting. Years of hard work and dedication have gone into crafting this game, and every word of its story is infused with heartfelt emotion. We sincerely hope it offers you a spectrum of feelings—joy, reflection, and comfort—especially during life’s tougher moments.”

The game promises to immerse players in a visually stunning world with lush, hand-drawn art and charming animations that bring both Hanako’s story and the beauty of flowers to vibrant life. As players progress through the story, they’ll encounter various customers, each with their own personal struggles and dreams. Every interaction challenges players to listen, empathize, and create bouquets that speak the unspoken, using flowers to bring comfort and understanding to their customers’ lives.

“Hanako’s Flower Shop” will be available on PC through Steam this April, priced at US$14.99. Interested players can follow FantaJI Games on their X account @FantaJIGames for the latest updates leading up to the launch.

For this small indie development team that “dreams big,” the release of “Hanako’s Flower Shop” represents not just the culmination of years of work, but also their contribution to what they see as a restoration of the gaming industry’s former glory. Through its blend of meaningful gameplay mechanics, emotional storytelling, and beautiful visuals, “Hanako’s Flower Shop” promises to be a touching exploration of growth, legacy, and the power of human connection through the universal language of flowers.
