Synopsis:

Claire and Ian arrive in Philadelphia to help the ailing Henry Grey. Roger and Buck receive an unexpected clue in their search for Jeremy.

This episode was full of surprises. One character left the show, while several familiar faces made their return. Roger is trying to piece everything together, and Claire faces yet another tough blow.

Jamie:

In this episode, we get a short glimpse of Jamie’s final moments with old Ian. It was heartwarming to witness their fond memories of childhood and to see Jamie by Ian’s side as he passed away. However, I found it surprising that Jenny remained so composed during Ian’s death. In the previous episode, she was extremely upset, which felt a bit exaggerated then. You’d expect more emotion from her while her husband was dying. This was the moment for Jenny to show her sorrow, yet she appeared unfazed as Jamie dug Ian’s grave. I’m just glad this might be the last we see of Jenny.

Claire:

When Claire comes back to America, Philadelphia feels very different. It’s more refined than North Carolina, but it’s also filled with British soldiers. Claire meets up with John and learns about Henry’s past surgeries to remove musket balls. Surprisingly, Denzell Hunter is also in Philly and has already taken out one of those musket balls. It’s great to see Denzell, another skilled doctor from that era. Together, they perform the surgery, and Henry recovers completely. Claire also runs into Mercy, Walter’s wife, whom she helped at Fort Ticonderoga. Mercy seems to care a lot about Henry, and we later find out she’s a spy. Being the kind person Claire is, she decides to help Mercy by delivering secret letters. This leads to trouble. Jamie has written to Claire and Ian, telling them he’s coming back to America, but then they hear that his ship has gone missing at sea. Once again, Claire is faced with the possibility of losing Jamie, and she falls into a deep sadness. To make things worse, her kindness in delivering the letters gets her into hot water, and a British soldier comes to arrest her. Sometimes, Claire really should stay out of other people’s affairs, especially when it’s risky. She should realize by now that she often ends up in tricky situations. To assist Claire, John makes a bold move and proposes to her. He believes that marrying her is the best way to keep her safe. While this might seem like their best choice, it’s strange that the British soldiers wouldn’t go after Claire just because she’s with John. And why would they trust John when he told them he wasn’t involved with Claire? Things are bound to get complicated, especially since it seems Jamie is still alive. What will happen if Claire ends up married to two men?

Ian:

The love triangle is still intense, with William crushing on Rachel, while she’s got feelings for Ian. Rollo finds Ian again, but this makes Rachel nervous because Ian is missing. Things get weird when Arch Bug tries to attack Rachel. Even though Arch had threatened Ian a while back, it feels like ancient history. Honestly, this plot twist seemed unnecessary. Ian makes an effort to rescue Rachel, but he doesn’t succeed. In the end, William steps up and takes down Arch. The main takeaway from all this? Ian and Rachel clearly care for each other. He’s like her protector. Later, Ian learns from a letter from Jamie that his father has died, but he seems to have come to terms with it.

Roger & Buck:

I really enjoyed this storyline. It keeps getting more interesting. At Geillis’ house, she tries to help Buck with his health problems, but Roger is struggling to stay calm. When they’re alone, he shares some details about Geillis’ past, and Buck wonders if she knows Rob. The time travel details are starting to confuse me a bit because I hadn’t realized she lived at the same time as Rob in the future. While trying to understand Geillis, she makes a move on Roger. We learn that she doesn’t know Rob Cameron, but maybe she’s lying? To complicate things, Dougal arrives. He claims he found a charm bracelet, but Roger knows they’re actually military tags. He realizes they belonged to his father, who crashed his plane as a pilot, and his body was never recovered. We also find out that Roger’s father is a time traveler too. It would be wild if Roger actually found him. The downside is, we still have no idea where Rob and Jemmy are.
