Marvel released another trailer for Captain America: Brave New World at D23 Brazil and fans couldn’t be more excited. The trailer further explains the events happening within the film and some cool moments from the movie.
Most notably more footage of Red Hulk Vs Captain America. The movie will be released in February of next year so we have plenty of time to nerd all over this trailer.
Let’s take a look at what we’ve learned about the movie’s story, characters, and some of the cool moments featured in the newest trailer of Captain America: Brave New World.
The Story
The world is on the brink of war. Every nation in the world is trying to lay claim to Tiamut’s corpse. The celestial Sersi defeated and turned into an unidentified substance. Until now.
Brave New World confirms that Sersi turned Tiamut into Adamantium. The same stuff coating the skeleton of the famous X-man. Adamantium is the only substance that can stand up against vibranium. The two pretty much cancel each other out.
Any nation that gains control of Tiamut’s body would pose a direct threat to Wakanda. Naturally, the United States is one of those nations laying a claim led by President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford).
This sets the stage for the spy thriller aspects of the film. Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) from Falcon and Winter Soldier is in prison for an attempt on President Ross’s life. Sam sets out on a quest to uncover the truth behind his friend’s actions.
Sidewinder is featured as a main villain and the trailer leads us to believe he is a red herring. Meant to be a decoy for the real villain pulling the strings. Especially since we hear the Leader telling Sam this in a voiceover in the trailer.
Unfortunately, we only see the Leader from behind wearing a hat and cast in shadow. But it’s him. And he’s been pulling the strings all along.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, somehow Ross has found himself injected with gamma-radiated blood and turns into the Red Hulk. Taking the movie out of the spy thriller realm and back into the superhero genre. And we’re treated to a pretty cool scene discussed further below.
The Characters
Since this film is part superhero action blockbuster and part spy thriller it’s crucial to know the cast of characters and who they are.
Sam Wilson (Captain America)
After the events of Flacon and Winter Soldier Sam has officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. At the beginning of the trailer, we see he is wearing the same mostly white costume from the limited series while later in the trailer we see him wearing a costume more in the vein of Steve Rogers’.
Sam appears to be enjoying being Captain America while still honoring Steve’s legacy. There is one scene in the trailer showing Ross asking Sam to officially join the U.S. military. Sam declines in a very Steve Rogers fashion.
Joaquin Torres (Falcon)
We first met Joaquin (Danny Ramirez) in Falcon and Winter Soldier when he helped Bucky and Sam take down the Flag Smashers. At the end of the series when Sam picks up Captain America’s shield he passes the Falcon mantle and suit to Joaquin.
This movie will see Joaquin officially flying around as the new Falcon alongside Sam. Unfortunately, we were not treated to any scenes of what Joaquin will bring to the Falcon as far as suit design and tech upgrades.
Isaiah Bradley
Isaiah Bradley is another character from Falcon and Winter Soldier. Introduced to us as a member of the military during the Korean War. Bradley was unwillingly experimented on with the super soldier serum.
Sent to kill the winter soldier the U.S. government through him in jail when he feared. They feared what the consequences of a black super soldier would be.
The end of Falcon and Winter Soldier saw Sam showing Bradley and display at the Captain America museum dedicated to him. Bradley was tearful with joy.
However, it appears that this joyful scene does not last as Bradley is in prison for attempting to assassinate President Ross. It’s clear he was under the control of the leader but it’s up to Sam to prove it.
Samuel Sterns (The Leader)
Samuel Sterns was first introduced way back in The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton. We saw him exposed to gamma-irradiated blood at the end of that movie and a transformation began, but were never given a resolution. Until now.
Blake’s Sterns is back in Brave New World and is potentially the villain behind everything. The plot against Ross, the plan to discredit and take down Captain America, and even infecting Ross and turning him into the Red Hulk.
The Leader is one of the baddest of the bad and no doubt will give Sam and the heroes of the MCU the fight of their lives before he’s through.
Ruth Bat-Seraph (Sabra)
This is Sabra’s first appearance in the MCU. The trailer did little to explain who she will be. In the comics, Sabra is a mutant and Israel’s first superhero.
She often fights alongside the X-Men believing in Charles Xavier’s philosophy. It’s unclear if she will be a mutant in the MCU or not. There is already precedent with Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch of the MCU taking mutant characters and rewriting them without the mutant x-gene.
However, at the end of Ms. Marvel did use the word mutant for the first time in the MCU to explain why someone had abilities. So it is unclear if Sabra will be another breadcrumb leading to the X-men in the MCU or not.
Sidewinder
Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito) is an interesting addition to the cast of Brave New World. This is not only his introduction into the MCU but was not originally intended for Brave New World. Instead, he was added in later in reshoots.
This means almost nothing is known about his character in the MCU. In the comics, he is mutated by an oil company and gains the ability to teleport. From there he leads a life of crime and organizes the Serpent Society providing structure to the criminal organization.
Rachel Leighton (Diamondback)
Little is known about the character in the MCU from the trailer. However, in the comics, she is a graduate of a Taskmaster academy and joins the Serpent Society.
She later betrays them to Captain America and leaves the group shortly after.
Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Red Hulk)
Though recast with Harrison Ford, Ross is the same Ross from Edward Norton’s Incredible Hulk. Ross is still mistrustful of superheroes, especially the Hulk.
In Brave New World, Ross has become President of the United States. He is infected with gamma-irradiated blood and turns into the Red Hulk engaging Sam in a fight. Leading to some cool moments.
Cool Moments
Because this is still a superhero film after all there are some exciting action scenes for fans to enjoy. The trailer showcased some cool new moments that have fans grinning to be sure.
Sonic Boom Landing
It’s safe to assume this scene takes place earlier in the film. Sam is still wearing the white costume from Falcon and Winter Soldier. Having tracked some bad guys to their location, Sam travels at Mach speed landing at speed in front of them.
Removing a new helmet to ensure he survives those speeds, Sam smiles at the group and simply says, “Wait for it.” He’s referring to the sonic boom which comes down at the ground and sends all but Sam flying backwards and unconscious.
Red Hulk Fight
One might question Sam’s decision to take a hulk on one to one. But Banner was an avenger and it’s safe to assume they each trained for the day they may have to subdue Banner alone.
This would explain why when Red Hulk hurls a car at Sam he leaps and slices the vehicle in half with his wings with ease. Possibly one of the coolest scenes in the trailer.
Shield Vs Missiles
And finally, we get to see Sam do something with the shield we never saw Steve do. Turns out the training montage in Falcon and Winter Soldier was worth it.
In the trailer, Sam is in a costume that resembles Steve’s and is under threat from a barrage of missiles. Sam throws his shield while flying and we are treated to it ricocheting between the missiles. Each one is destroyed save for one. When the shield returns to Sam he places it in front of him folding his wings around it.
And he just takes the missile head-on without a problem. Epic.
“You’re Not Steve Rogers”
There’s a scene in the trailer where Sam challenges Ross and Ross reminds him he’s not Steve Rogers. And Sam takes this as a reminder that he is his own Captain America. And that’s great.
Sam is not Steve Rogers, no one can be except Steve himself. Sam is his own Captain America. He’s more than a black Captain America, he’s more than Steve Rogers’ replacement, he is Captain America.
This movie will see Sam solidifying exactly the type of Captain America he will be and the legacy he will leave for the MCU.
Captain America: Brave New World will be released on February 14, 2025.
