I once again began playing Valheim about a week ago. I had been holding out for the Ashlands update; however, sometimes, you need the warm embrace of a familiar game. One evening, while booting up Steam, I saw a title in the store I had never heard of before. Therefore, I did some digging, and readers, we must discuss it. So, without further ado, let’s chat about Night is Coming.

Night is Coming‘s Story

Night is Coming is a building and development survival game set in a fantasy world. Players will create a settlement in the frigid depths of the Carpathian Mountains, which is already brimming with folklore. Developer Wild Forest Studio will bring that folklore to gamers, taking inspiration from Slavic mythology. As players build their base, they must ensure their villagers’ survival. These settlers are not in for a cozy road of luxury. Monsters and beasts hell-bent on their destruction will lurk in every corner. In time, these villagers will rise to the occasion and seek answers on destroying these beings for good. Therefore, their survival and the fate of the world rests in your hands.

      • Each winter, the monsters and the Darkness get stronger.

      • This title does reward overcoming challenges; however, things can get hard quickly.
  • A stunning atmosphere.
    • This title has dynamic weather, a day and night cycle, and seasonal shifts.
    • Alizbar created the audio.

Thoughts on Night is Coming

I am not usually one to play tower defense-type games. However, the more I think about it, the more it sounds like a more strategic game of Sims. I love the idea of micromanaging a whole village, an entire village of people with their own desires and talents. Plus, I get to watch them thrive and take on mobs of monsters from folklore. That feels like something I would be interested in exploring.

Additionally, these graphics are stunning. I tend to think of these games as being one-dimensional, focusing more on the mechanics than aesthetics. The Steam page contains GIFs with grotesque monsters, beautifully crafted landscapes, and fantastic shadows. The story is also compelling. I am curious about why we decided to settle in this harsh environment. Overall, I do see myself checking out Night is Coming upon release.

Odds & Ends

Night is Coming does not have a full release date yet; it is planned for 2024. However, more information can be found on Steam, including dev updates. If you are in the market for another survival game, I recommend this Enshrouded article. Ultimately, I look forward to seeing what survival games will be born in 2024.
