New year, new anime! The anime 2024 roster has plenty in store for audiences. My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War are all making returns this year, to the surprise of no one. However, here’s a look at some of the less hyped shows making an appearance this year.
MASHLE Season 2
Already coming with arguably one of the best anime opening songs of the year, Mashle follows Mash Burnedead, a boy who attends Magic School but can’t use magic. Relying on his strength, Mash makes it his mission to become a Divine Visionary to make people leave him alone, hopefully. This second season follows Mash and friends through the Divine Visionary Candidate Exam.
Blue Exorcist Season 3
After 7 years, Blue Exorcist is back with the Shimane Illuminati arc. Rin and his twin Yukio are spawns of Satan with a human woman. After their adoptive father is killed, Rin enrolls in an exorcist school. His mission? Kill Satan. In his journey to do so, Rin makes friends, has relationships tested, and fights like hell for who and what he believes in.
Haikyuu!! Movie: Battle of the Garbage Dump
Arguably, the biggest slap in the face is speedrunning the remaining 100 chapters of Haikyuu into two films. Battle of the Garbage Dump will focus on the highly emotional match between Karasuno and Nekoma. While fans of the series are upset that this iconic match will not receive the treatment the prior Inarizaki season got, they are still excited and a bit uneasy to see how this pivotal match will be translated to the silver screen.
Kaiju No.8
In a world where kaiju run amok daily, Kafka and childhood bestie Mina pledge to take down kaiju together. Fast forward a few years, and they are now full-grown adults. Kafka works for a cleaning service that picks up the city after a fight. While Mina is the Captain of the Defense Force’s 3rd Division. After remembering his promise to her, Kafka makes it his mission to follow through. However, in an odd turn of events, a kaiju enters his body and gains the ability to turn into a kaiju. Will this become a problem or a blessing?
Black Butler Season 4
10 years since the third season, Black Butler is back with a new studio animating the Public School Arc. After selling his soul to a devil, Ciel Phantomhive uses his newfound power to work as the Queen’s Guard dog, taking on the seedy underbelly of England. However, things get dicey as he also fights other supernatural entities along the way. This season follows Ciel as he goes undercover at Weston College to find out what happened to the Queen’s cousin and learns about the horrors of school and sports while investigating suspicious plots.
Sound! Euphonium Season 3
Eight years since the end of season 2, the band is back together! With the start of the new year, the Kitauji High School concert band starts making their way to qualifying for competitions as the band members struggle with growing up and coming face to face with the realities of life, love, and burnout.
