Mouse is the newest FPS game from Polish indie studio Fumi Games. The latest trailer has taken the internet by storm with its homage to film noir and 1930s cartoons. The first trailer was released 7 months ago with a barebones look at the game. It focused on showcasing the gameplay animation with jazzy tunes to accompany it.

What Do We Know?

Set in 1935, players follow a gruff detective investigating a city drowning in corruption, death, and fear. This detective scours the city of Mouseburg engaging in shootouts against goons, finding roughed-up prisoners, and dropping pianos in the process. This game has a lot to offer players in ways to take out those who want to take you out, including shooting down a helicopter with a Tommy gun.

There isn’t too much known about the game’s plot. However, I paused the trailer and read the front page of the newspaper in the video. In it, I noticed a few interesting details that hint at what the story will feature.

Mouseburg is a town in Germany where racial tensions between rats and mice are at an all-time high. Additionally, the newspaper offers words demeaning the mice as they try to make ends meet in the country. In the foreground of this turmoil is a rising new progressive mayoral candidate for the city who has the support of a local tycoon. A poster of this mayoral candidate is in the trailer where he stands in front of a ship promoting a New America.

How all of this will come together is unknown, but I have a few theories forming.

What Makes it Stand Out?

The only element these games have in common is drawing inspiration from 1930s cartoons.

This specific subgenre of games has been made popular through titles like Cuphead and Bendy and the Ink Machine. Cuphead focused on a vibrant, whimsical art design paired with a simple story with sidescroller gameplay. Bendy went the horror route, focusing on survival, puzzles, and a growing narrative that will expand with the upcoming title, Bendy: The Cage.

Mouse stands out as an FPS game. This, paired with cartoon violence straight out of Looney Tunes, and a story that rings similar to the novel-turned-film Who Framed Roger Rabbit has generated a lot of buzz. As a result, this combination has the internet excited to see the final product.

Mouse Release Date?

Unfortunately, Mouse will not be available any time soon. The game is scheduled for a 2025 release. It will be available on PC, Switch, Xbox, and Playstation, but you can wishlist it on Steam now!
