We first caught wind of Wonka in May 2021, only seeing on-set photos of Timothée Chalamet in the classic brown top hat and purple coat. It had us begging for more. Last week on July 13, we finally got our first real look at the upcoming Warner Bros film.
Wonka is set as a prequel to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971).
The trailer opens with Willy (Timothée Chalamet) talking about how he is a magician and inventor when it comes to chocolate. He perfected his craft while traveling the world for 7 years and is ready to take the world by a sweet storm.
Summary:
Willy is on a mission to give people the gift of chocolate and create the best shop the world has ever seen. But he faces a larger obstacle than he initially anticipated: The Chocolate Cartel. All other chocolate makers that have come to town seeking the approval of The Gallery Gourmet, have been crushed by the Cartel.
Will Wonka’s ingenuity, charisma, and magic be enough to overcome?
The Cast:
Wonka has an all-star cast including: Timothée Chalamet, Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key, and many more. This cast includes Oscar nominees, Emmy Award winners, and Peabody Award winners. I look forward to seeing how each actor brings the film to life.
I didn’t know that we needed Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, but now that I have had a taste, I couldn’t be more excited to see the movie.
Solely based on the first look at this trailer, Chalamet is a heartwarming, charming and fearless chocolatier. Most of Chalamet’s roles have been more serious, quiet, and composed, but Willy is a loud and playful role. I hope Chalamet rises to the occasion!
Although we didn’t hear any sing-a-long songs in the trailer, I am anticipating a few musical numbers and am honestly curious if Timothée Chalamet can sing!
