Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.

This is it! After Episode 109’s shocking cliffhanger of an ending between Goku and Jiren over control of the Super Spirit Bomb, we’re treated with one of the shocking twists in the entire Tournament Of Power in Episode 110. What exactly went down to make this a monumental episode in Dragon Ball Super and who exactly won the Super Spirit Bomb tug-of-war? Well, let’s get right on into our recap and review!

We pick up right where we left off, Goku didn’t get vaporized by the Super Spirit Bomb from Jiren like we originally thought. Instead of the fake out of last week’s episode, we still find Goku and Jiren trying to counter each other with the powerful move.Everyone, besides Ribrianne and Vegeta — who are fighting in the shadows of the climatic power struggle — are looking in awe over the clash above them as fighting has ceased.

Goku and Jiren are going back and forth, until Jiren drops his hands and instead just uses his fierce glare and a powerful will to push the Spirit Bomb back entirely right into Goku! Goku’s most powerful move fully engulfs him and he disappears from the arena complete, with only a crater in its wake. Gohan, Piccolo and everyone else believes Goku to be dead since he didn’t teleport back to the stands. The Omni-Kings, along with the Grand Minister, however rule out that Jiren isn’t disqualified for killing Goku since the move was from Goku himself. This keeps Jiren in the tournament.

Universe 7 is in shambles though, with Goku seemingly gone everyone is wondering what is next including Beerus. He yells out to Goku and just then, the whole Null Realm begins to tremble. This isn’t Beerus however, the trembling’s epicenter is the crater. Rumbling is felt throughout and a flash of light shoots down into the crater and a figure appears from the ground. It’s Goku! But he’s different, not just in domineer but in appearance too with both grey and black hair and silvery blue aura around him. He’s achieved a new transformation!

When we come back from the commercial break, Dyspo and Top are both near Jiren who are all right next to the crater that Goku is standing at. They’re looking directly at Goku and before they can even move, Goku speeds up right up and over Jiren! Top and Dyspo try throwing punches at Goku, but he counters them easily and tosses them away. Top begins to shoot his Justice Fist beam attack at Goku but this “new” Goku easily sides step each shot by walking by them! Jiren then orders Top to stand down as he takes on Goku alone.

This “new” Goku is actually on par with Jiren, he’s able to actually land hits against him and not to mention dodge ALL of his attack! Almost everyone, from the stands to even the arena grounds are wondering what exactly happened to Goku. Eventually though, Whis stumbles upon it and says that this is a transformation that he only thought was a myth, and Beerus further elaborates for everyone that this new form of Goku’s is called “Autonomous Ultra Instinct”. It’s a form that isn’t easily attained and that only deities can reach it, and if they do it’s through lifetimes of training. Whis further theorizes that the way Goku achieved this was two fold, it was from his own Spirit Bomb that was laced with the powers of everyone else in Universe 7 and also by Jiren’s added power when he was countering it, pushing it back into Goku. This basically let the Spirit Bomb to juiced up with so much energy and power that when it imploded on Goku, it revitalized himself to god levels! Think basically to how he used a simple Ki Blast to revive himself from the dead against Hit episodes ago but times a thousand or so.

While this is all happening the battle between Jiren and Goku is still going on and it’s finally an even fight. Goku is getting some good shots into Jiren, but then his eyes flicker from the silverly hue to his regular shade of black and then back again. Jiren gets some distance away from Goku and lands in the crater. Goku uses the arena’s pillar — that is acting as a giant timer — to launch himself directly at Jiren at godly speeds. He speeds straight ahead, almost untraceable to normal eyes, but Jiren blocks Goku’s finishing punch. Turns out Goku expended all of the Spirit Bomb energy he had in him that made him go Ultra Instinct! He’s back to regular old Goku now and Jiren gives him one heavy punch that sends him flying. However, while he does this Hit appears out of no where and tries to deliver a Time Skip punch against Jiren, but Jiren also blocks this. Whis says that a fighter is most venerable during the moment they make a movie, yet Jiren is so advance and powerful that he even prevented that mid-move!

We cut to where Goku landed and Vegeta is next to him. Vegeta wants to know everything that Ultra Instinct was and how Goku actually tapped into it. But well, as luck would have it, Goku doesn’t even know and before he can say more a fighter shows up in front of them. Goku is in no shape to fight, so Vegeta faces the fighter, but as he does Goku is whisked away by someone.

Turns out that someone is Frieza, and he has a Death Beam pointed straight at Goku — who at this point can’t even move a muscle to fight back. Frieza grins, ready to fire and we cut to the credits.

Wow, just wow. While I knew Ultra Instinct was a thing — thanks in part to the video games like Xenoverse and Heroes — I didn’t know it was this powerful seeing it in actual action. It makes you wonder why it was never used against Broly in the movie that came out a few months; yet at the same time they have an easy way out with it, explaining that Goku himself doesn’t even know how to tap into it. Maybe in the future after the Tournament Of Power is over and we finally get new Dragon Ball Super episodes, it could be a plot point for Goku going forward? Other then that, Episode 110 was a well done episode and the fighting between Goku and Jiren was phenomenal. But this wasn’t the end of the tournament though, instead this was nothing but the halfway point since we still have 30 more minutes left until the Tournament is over. And at this point it’s anyone’s game still!
