Slight spoilers may be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.

The Zeno Expo between Universe 7 and 9 is well underway as the Tournament Of Power looms in the distance. With the first match between Buu and Universe 9’s Basil being the sole focus of Episode 79. So lets get right down to the fighting!

We pick up right where we left off with Buu down after a series of kicks by Basil. Turns out that Buu was just playing along with Basil and thought of him as a “friend who wanted to play”. Goku and Gohan both note that Basil and the rest of Universe 9’s fighters have mysterious ki that they can’t pick up on at all and all they know is what they’re seeing so far in real time in the ring.

Back in the ring, it’s only after Basil powers up and launches a bunch of dangerous ki attacks at Buu, that inadvertently hurt Hercule, that Buu finally goes into a rage on the offensive laying it into Basil with punches, kicks and even sends the Universe 9 fighter flying out of the ring for what looks to be a ring out victory.

Here Goku and the others of Universe 7 think that they won the first round, but instead the Grand Minster states that ring outs do not matter during the Zeno Expo and that each fight will continue until either opponents can’t fight anymore or the Zennies have had their fill of fighting.

With that Basil climbs back into the ring and demands from his Supreme Kai a power up to take on Buu, which he receives in a form of a fruit that looks almost identical to the “Fruit From The Tree Might” — That the villain, Turles used against Goku and the others in the old Dragon Ball Z movie, “The Tree of Might”. Basil takes one bite of it and instantly powers up to insane levels, it even makes him super buff and he starts going on the offensive against Buu as he launches an even more devastating ki blast attack.

But Buu being Buu and being able to regenerate, easily survives the attack and instead launches his own Majin Kamehameha back at Basil which entirely engulfs him. However due to being massively powered up, Basil survives it and is still standing much to the shock of everyone on Universe 7, expect for Elder Kai. The old timer quips that Basil is just about done and out of power, which he is correct as Basil immediately powers down and passes out. The Grand Minister declares Buu as the winner of the first round.

With that Buu heads back to the stands and heals Hercule, and the pair celebrate by eating. However the rest of Universe 7 can’t really celebrate just yet as Universe 9’s Supreme Kai sends out Basil’s brother, Lavender out to the expo floor with their third mysterious brother saying to go for the kill and hold nothing back. Gohan then steps up and says that he’s stronger then ever now to his dad — yeah, we’ll see about that — as he lands on the expo floor. They do an intense stare off as the episode ends on that note.

As you can see, this was all about the first round with absolutely no time to waste for anything filler, outside the minor character moments between Beerus and the Supreme Kai of Universe 9 bickering over the power up fruit that Basil took to outclass Buu. The only interesting twist was during Buu’s angry rage and counter of one of Basil’s ki blast, Buu launched it up by accident into Universe 11’s stands where it was stopped by a cloaked, mysterious fighter. But other then that, nothing else diverted from the fight between Basil and Buu with Buu being the star of the episode after so long of not doing anything.

It was refreshing to finally get an episode all about what the series as a whole is known for, fighting; compared to all the other fillers we’ve had to sit through over the past few weeks. Hopefully this continues into the next round as Gohan takes on Lavender and we don’t get pointless talking/filler moments that eat up the entire episode.
