Interview with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Dev Team

Last week TGON sat down briefly with Expert Game Designer, Tony Flame, from the upcoming Call of Duty Black Ops 4.

Tony has been with Call of Duty since the second installment so he’s seen a lot of changes. He described the games somewhat modest beginnings from a WW2 shooter to what is now arguably one of the best shooters of all time. The franchise has evolved into a mammoth operation that now even includes zombies.

When asked what kinds of things we can expect from the next installment Tony indicated that they’ve upped the ante when it comes to how the game feels. The experience will be smoother but most importantly it will feel larger than life. A lot of old maps will be brought back but with the new customization’s and styles of play those old maps will feel quite fresh. On top of that there will be lots of DLC and add-ons post release and so the game will receive continued support in that respect for at the very least a year.

One of the new features the game will have to offer is Blackout, a battle royale mode similar to the likes of PUBG and Fortnite. We asked Tony what impact, if any, those games had on their decision to include Blackout. Tony was quite frank with us and acknowledged that he and a lot of his team play games like Fortnite and PUBG and enjoy them. When it came time to decide on the new mode they thought it was a no brainer but they wanted to make sure that it was not a carbon copy of those other games. They wanted it to be distinctly Call of Duty. Blackout will be a ‘celebration of the entire franchise’ and so will feature the largest battle royale type map on the market. The map will feature signature landmarks as well as some Easter eggs for fans of the series.

Zombies are also making a return and with them two distinctive separate storylines. Tony was rather excited about the ‘Voyage of Despair’ map which will take place on the RMS Titanic. He mentioned that its one of those maps that will stay with you for a long time.

We of course can’t wait to get our hands on the game and so the release can’t come soon enough. Keep it locked on TGON for any updates.

The official release date for the game is October 12, 2018 and the beta for Blackout is expected to come out on September 10, 2018.
