On the first day of Emerald City Comic Con, writer Matt Mair Lowery and artist Cassie Anderson announced that they are working on a sequel to their Young Adult graphic novel, Lifeformed: Cleo Makes Contact (Dark Horse Comics). They also have a Patreon Page where fans can get exclusive looks into Cleo Makes Contact and Cleo’s next adventure!

For those unfamiliar with Lifeformed, here’s a quick synopsis:

“Lifeformed tells the story of Cleo, a typical eleven-year-old girl who loves snacks, desperately wants a cat and isn’t 100% sure she’s ready to grow up just yet. But in the wake of an alien invasion — and her father’s death — she must leave behind the life she knows to fight for the future of Earth. Aided by a shapeshifting, rebel alien posing as her dad, Cleo packs extra cheese curls for the road as the two travel in search of both family and foe, bonding and pondering what it means to be human. As the threats they face grow more dangerous, Cleo must work through her grief, dig deep and muster the courage to fight back.”

Cleo’s story is simultaneously straightforward and brimming with complexity that gives everyone, of every age, something to relate to. I expected nothing less of fantastic coming from a novel picked up by Dark Horse, but these creators went above and beyond with their work. I can’t wait to see Cleo’s next adventure!

Anderson and Mair Lowery, both Portland residents, are also enthusiastic about the announcement:

“We’re really excited to get to continue Cleo and the rest of the characters’ journeys, and to have readers onboard via Patreon for not just the books themselves but as part of the creative process,” said Mair Lowery.

“This second part to Cleo and Alex’s story is going to be a fun ride,” Anderson said, “and we can’t wait to share the behind-the-scenes process with readers through our Patreon.”
