The long anticipated release of JK Rowling’s first screenplay (and a sort of prequel to her Harry Potter franchise) is drawing nearer, and many people are still wondering what this new magical movie will really entail. Luckily, here at The Game of Nerds, there is no shortage of Harry Potter knowledge, and we’re here to answer the biggest questions about the next big adventure — Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them.

How does FB fit into the Harry Potter world/timeline?

Fantastic Beasts is a prequel to the events in the Harry Potter books/movies. The events of the Harry Potter franchise take place in the 1980s, while Fantastic Beasts will take place in the 1920s. They also take place in different locations; HP was in the UK while FB takes place in New York City. The ultimate connection between FB and HP is the main character. FB follows magizooligist Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) as he travels from England to New York with a briefcase full of magical creatures. Newt Scamander was mentioned briefly in the Harry Potter novels as he was the author of one of Harry Potter’s textbooks while he was at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The textbook was titled, you guessed it — Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

What is the plot of FB?

As stated before, the premise is the chase to gather all of Newt Scamander’s magical creatures that have escaped his briefcase and are running wild around New York City. But as we know with JK Rowling, things are never that simple! While JK Rowling did publish a full version of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them textbook, it is just that — a textbook. It is a detailed list of all the magical creatures JK Rowling has created, so there is actually no plot to the book. The plot was created for the movie.

Who are the characters in FB?

There is a central quartette of characters in FB. Besides Newt Scamander, we have Tina Goldstein and her sister Queenie. They are both witches, very close, and essentially raised each other. Then there is Jacob, a muggle (No-Maj as its called in America) who has returned from the war and accidentally runs into Newt Scamander, who throws Jacob into his quest.

Will we see any characters from the Harry Potter books/movies?

As FB takes place 60 years before the start of the Harry Potter stories, I doubt that anyone we know will be in the movie. However, we know JK Rowling and we know she probably has some tricks and surprises up her sleeve, so it’s anyone’s guess as to who will make an appearance. FB is slated to be three movies, so I wouldn’t be surprised if at least Dumbledore appears in there somewhere.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will premiere in November 2016.
