The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Mar10 day has come and gone, and this year, Nintendo deigned to give us something extra special: the final trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie! And it looks like Illumination is getting very ambitious with what we’re getting this time around! I’m RJ Writing Ink, and to the best of my ability, I’m going to be breaking down as much of this final trailer as possible for all my fellow gamers. So grab your overalls, your plumber hats (or SMG4 hats if you’re feeling spicy), and let’s have some fun.

Firstly, it should be noted that the final trailer we got from Nintendo and Illumination isn’t the only look at the upcoming film. The Nintendo Presents stream had various other clips and reveals for the movie, some of which I will mention. First and foremost, is the trailer itself: it’s awesome.

That’s a Spicy Trailer!

Right out of the gate, the trailer demonstrates its video game inspirations with Princess Peach’s castle being abducted by a flying saucer. It’s taken right from the start of Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, one of the franchise’s best games and one of the big inspirations for this movie. Except this time, it’s Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi who are stuck inside. It then cuts to the reveal of Bowser Jr, armed with his magic brush and ready to fight to free his father from captivity. And apparently, he either succeeds or gives Bowser the chance to escape, because we get a shot of him back to his normal size and reunited with his army.

Much like the last movie, it seems that Bowser is going to be the main antagonist, except this time he’ll have his son helping him. Furthermore, the trailer also shows that their main target seems to be Princess Rosalina. Introduced in the Galaxy game, she’s the caretaker of the Lumas. And it’s likely that Bowser and Jr are targeting her to take control of the Lumas so they can conquer all existence! Classic Bowser stuff?

Whatever the case may be, all of this leads to a reversal of the Galaxy game’s premise, as we see Peach and Toad be the ones who set out to rescue their friends. And this brings us to an appearance that no one was expecting, but a lot of older fans love: R.O.B.

Standing for Robotic Operating Buddy and injtjammt released as an add-on for their Famicom (the NES in Japan), R.O.B. was marketed alongside the NES when it hit stores in America. Basically, he was their ace in the hole, serving as a companion for some games to encourage people to buy the NES. It might seem crazy bkw, but back then, the gaming industry was on the brink of collapse in America after a crash a few years earlier. The plan worked, though, as the NES helped save games in America, though R.O.B. was phased out after only a few years. He would’ve been an obscure part of gaming history, but thanks to his inclusion in Smash Bros, he’s had renewed popularity since the 2000s. He’s a powerhouse in the games and I’m happy that he’s getting some movie love.

Okay, I’m looking forward to this!

That wasn’t the biggest surprise for me, though. Apparently, in the upcoming movie, Yoshi will be voiced by Donald Glover. Given how I only know him as young Lando in the Solo film, though, I have no emotional reaction to this. All I want to know is why Illumination thinks they need someone to voice act for Yoshi when they can just use his sounds from the games. It’s not like Yoshi will have much to say!

Beyond that one gripe, though, I’m super hyped for

it. I’m actually thinking of ordering an SMG4 hat just for the occasion! But what do you guys think about the trailer? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below!
