It’s back to the time of year where sometimes we are forced to stay inside due to weather! That’s right—it’s snowstorm season. When a snowstorm hits, we prepare the best we can. Getting groceries, picking up bags of rock salt, grabbing gas for generators—and the best part, getting out the DVDs.

Sometimes, if we’re lucky, a snowstorm can actually be fun! Staying inside all day with your friends and family, making hot chocolate and watching the snow fall? Sounds like a pretty good way to spend the day. You can make that snow day even better by picking out some of the best movies to binge watch in your downtime! Here are some of the movies you should be watching this snow season.

A SERIES OF SERIES WITH ACTION, ADVENTURE, AND LIGHTSABERS

A snow storm is the perfect time to watch a series! With ample time on your hands, you’ll be able to start and finish the perfect movie marathon.

JAMES BOND

The James Bond movie series is a great choice! You can pick your favorite 007 and just spend all day watching action-packed stories back-to-back. Whether you’re a fan of the originals with Sean Connery, or enjoy the modern take of these Ian Fleming written adventures with Daniel Craig (this author’s favorite), you’ll leave your snow day wanting a dry martini, shaken, not stirred.

The James Bond movies series and it’s different variations are currently streaming on Netflix.

STAR WARS

An obvious choice. A snow storm can’t get any colder than planet Hoth, right? The Star Wars series has so many options and various series within it’s own series, that you can really pick anything to binge and have a good time. Choose the prequels, the sequels, the original trilogy—or even some stand alone films like Rogue One or Solo.

The Star Wars Series is currently streaming on Disney+

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

It’s another James Bond type series, only this time, the American version. The Mission Impossible series is another great action-adventure, team-up movie that has audiences solving the crimes and mysteries right alongside Tom Cruise. With 8 movies total within the series, you have plenty of choices to choose from! Would you rather watch Tom Cruise climb up the tallest building in the world, or actually motorbike jump off a cliff?

The Mission Impossible series is currently streaming on services Paramount+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and MGM+

THE FEEL GOODS THAT WILL KEEP YOU WARM

There’s nothing better than watching a feel-good movie to keep you warm on an icy day. Whether you want to laugh, or cry, or maybe both, feel good movies are our comfort movies. You can feel the ultimate comfort in a snow storm by watching some of these movies!

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

A personal favorite of mine. I know I can watch The Princess Bride anytime, any day of the week. While we’re stuck inside watching the snow, so is the young Grandson, listening to a story told by his Grandpa. Buttercup and Westley have the best love story of all time, one that lasts the ages, and keeps us warm from the cold.

The Princess Bride is currently streaming on Disney+

THE TERMINAL

Starring big actors like Tom Hanks, Stanley Tucci, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, The Terminal follows traveler Viktor Navorski as he tries to accomplish his dreams in New York City, without being allowed in NYC. With his country at war, Viktor is stuck at JFK airport with no way to leave or go back to his home country. Once you watch The Terminal, being stuck at home won’t look so bad anymore.

The Terminal is currently streaming on Pluto TV.

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

Another favorite of mine, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the ultimate comfort movie. Ben Stiller stars as Walter, a man who is still trying to find his place in the world, just like the rest of us. To get away from his regular life at his regular job, Walter daydreams scenarios that take him to places far and wide. Watch what happens when Walter actually ravels to those places far and wide . . . it’s something magical.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is currently available to rent on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.

A LAUGH A DAY KEEPS THE SNOW AWAY

MR. MOM

Another take at being stuck at home, but this time, it’s Michael Keaton as a first-time stay-at-home Dad. When Jack is laid off from work and his wife Caroline finds a job first, he has to take on a new job—24/7 parenthood. It’s a classic tale on the mistakes parents make, even experienced ones, and all of the shenanigans kids get up to. Watch Jack feel stuck at home, just like you. You’ll be in good company with Mr. Mom.

Mr. Mom is currently streaming on tubi.

RIDE ALONG

It’s Kevin Hart and Ice Cube in a buddy/cop movie, you can’t really beat that! Ice Cube clearly plays the veteran cop who gets stuck alongside Kevin Hart as these two begin to undercover a dangerous crime-ring. With bullets and insults flying left and right, these two have to figure out how to work together to get out alive.

Ride Along is available for rent on Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Another Kevin Hart flick, but this time, he’s standing next to The Rock. A take on the classic film Jumanji, this modern-world story is filled with teenage angst, hilarity, and Jack Black—what’s better than that? Whenever this movie pops onto a cable channel I happen to be scrolling by, I always get hooked and watch the whole thing. If you’re looking for a light-heart adventure tale, I think you’ll find it in the heart of the jungle.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is currently streaming on Hulu.

MY HEART IS FULL OF SONG

DREAMGIRLS

“And you, and you, and you, You’re gonna love me”

Talk about a powerhouse—Jennifer Hudson is absolutely breath taking in Dreamgirls. Honestly, It’s such a star-studded cast. Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy are just a few of the faces you’ll recognize in this critically acclaimed musical movie adaptation. Dreamgirls is one of the best (and yet underrated) musical-to-film adaptions there is! The snow storm howling outside your window will fade away as you watch some dazzling performances and hear effortless singing.

Dreamgirls is streaming on tubi and Pluto TV.

LA LA LAND

We all know the piano chords to this one. The minute La La Land is on the screen, we’re hooked. It really can’t get any better than Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. La La Land depicts just how hard it is chasing after dreams to accomplish the simple desire of doing what you love. Mia and Sebastian are cut from the same cloth, and that cuts into their relationship. As we’re stuck inside, those two are stuck choosing between success and love.

La La Land is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

“The hills are alive with the sound of music”

My absolute favorite. I can say that I did watch The Sound of Music during our last snow storm, and it was perfect, So, I highly suggest you give this one a watch. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer are the textbook guidelines for the perfect movie-musical and on-screen romance. No other film can get me to laugh and smile like this one does. You may not be in Austria when you watch this, but boy you’ll feel like you are.

The Sound of Music is streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

Stay safe this winter season! And stay warm with some of these great movies to chose from on your snow days!
