Tom Holland—the actor who has been playing Spider-Man since 2016—surprised many Marvel fans on August 1, 2025. For his next upcoming film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Holland released a short video that revealed his new suit that the webhead will don for his next adventure. The internet has gone wild about this new look, but unfortunately, not much is known about the suit just yet. However, here’s what we do know:

The Suit Itself

First, let’s dive into the basic details of the suit. The Hollywood Reporter states that “the new suit shows a larger spider on his chest than his previous costumes in the films Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. It’s also worth noting that the Spidey suit looks more similar to Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s suits in their respective Spider-Man films.” Esquire also mentions that the “costume is the closest it’s ever been to looking ripped from the page[s]” of the original comic books. I must admit, when I first read both of these articles and then took a closer look at Holland’s new suit, I was completely blown away!

Not only can you find the inspiration from the previous Spideys in this new costume, but you can definitely notice the parallels to the comics. For instance, Holland’s new suit has the iconic web patterns all over it. Now, I could be digging too deep into this, but it looks very similar to Maguire’s suit in how long and spaced out the lines are. Further, Holland’s costume also possesses the vibrant hues of red and blue that Garfield’s suit has, making it striking and amazing to the eyes of Spidey fans everywhere. Then, of course, there’s the clearly larger spider insignia on his chest (which I honestly can’t believe I never noticed how small the original was in past Holland movies compared to Maguire and Garfield). As for the comics, Holland’s suit is almost a perfect match: from the red boots, to the blue pants and outlines, and then the main red around the chest and tops of his arms. The only thing I see a key difference in are the eyes, but I like that they still look the same as they did since “Civil War,” continuing to carry Holland’s iteration of the character all these years later.

The Background

Whether you’re a huge fan of Spider-Man (or Marvel in general), aren’t up to date with recent MCU projects, or just need a refresher, the question remains: how did we get to this point? What made our favorite webhead change costumes yet again? And why does it feel so different than the other times that he changed suits?

To answer these questions, we need to travel back to a couple years ago, when “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was released. Peter’s identity was revealed to the world, so he tried to get Dr. Strange to make everyone forget. Instead, they accidentally drew in Macguire and Garfield’s Spider-Men along with all their villains. After curing the villains, Peter would make the ultimate sacrifice to keep incursions to the MCU from happening: by making everyone forget that he ever existed. At the end of the movie, we see Peter get his own crappy apartment and sewing his own suit from scratch.

This seems unnecessary at first, given how he presumably still had access to his Iron Spider suit. However, this action has way more significance than you think. For instance, Esquire points out that “Peter exists with nothing to his name, not even his high school record…Truly, Peter has to start over as a total nobody.” Think about it: Peter Parker, in the eyes of everyone on Earth, doesn’t exist anymore. He’s practically a ghost. Even though everyone still remembers Spider-Man, Peter still had to rebuild the webhead from the ground up. Maybe he could’ve still used his nanotech suit, but that most likely would’ve portrayed his connections to Iron Man, which would then draw many suspicions from the FBI or law enforcement. But regardless of the reasons, Peter needed to start over. Without Iron Man’s tech, money, or other kinds of support. Instead, Peter has to rely on his own resources and determination. It truly is a brand new day, and this new suit embodies that point perfectly.

What The Future Holds

Again, not much is currently known about the suit yet. Since it was just revealed last week, it’s not surprising. But since it leaves many fans scratching their heads and eagerly waiting for more Spidey news, all we can really do is guess at what this means for our favorite web-slinging hero. For instance, since this suit symbolizes Peter’s new, humble beginnings, we can already see things are gonna be tough for him. This is especially when you consider that not only is Scorpion FINALLY gonna make his debut, but we’re also getting the return of the Hulk AND the Punisher! As if the suit wasn’t already a foreshadowing of how tough Peter’s life already is, it’s confirmed with the returns and debuts of some of Marvel’s toughest street-level (with the exception of Hulk) characters! Honestly, on a personal side note, I’m just worried that they’re once again gonna mess up Peter’s suit (like being torn up or burned or whatever) and they’re gonna replace it yet again. After all, you don’t just walk away from an encounter from Punisher or Hulk or even Scorpion without some lasting damage. And that’s not even addressing Dr. Doom down the line! Anyway, I always love seeing Holland’s new suits, but I hate that he needs to keep replacing them in every movie.

Anyway, I digress. We already knew Peter’s life was gonna be difficult due to how his loved ones forgot who he was, and now because of the aforementioned characters, but I’m really glad to see how the suit further embodies that aspect. I’m not sure how big of a role it can or will play in this film, but I hope Holland and Marvel will pleasantly surprise us. For now, I’m really excited for this upcoming project and how Holland is paying homage to his predecessors (including the comics) with this new design.
