Panty and Stocking season 2 started three weeks ago, and it’s been a true return to form. While it’s been about 15 years between the first season and this one, the show hasn’t missed a step.
This cult favorite show is known for its raunchy humor, chaotic action, and whimsical art style. Produced by Studio Trigger, it’s no surprise that it can be outlandish in concept but amazing to watch in execution.
A Quick Summary
Panty and Stocking follows the titular angel sisters after they were kicked out of heaven for being too sinful. Panty is debilitatingly horny all the time, and Stocking’s a glutton. The only way back into Heaven is to collect Heaven Coins that they can only earn by slaying ghosts in Daten City, a purgatory for lost souls.
Moving Like Nothing Happened
The premiere episode started without missing a beat. Well, after the show took a few minutes to update viewers on what happened between seasons one and two by both acknowledging it’s been 15 years between the seasons, but in-universe, it’s been 5 minutes.
The first episode feels more like a season finale as it quickly wraps up the lingering plot line with a comical but awesome fight scene between the titular sisters. Grievances of stolen items, food, and other petty sibling squabbles are aired while the two angels with the power to end space and time are going all out on each other. Like many petty sibling squabbles, it ends, and they act as if they weren’t just trying to kill each other.
Humor
Before the premiere, I was worried that the show would be toned down to appeal to a wider audience. However, Studio Trigger dispelled all of my fears within the first two episodes. The humor remains just as crass as it was when it first aired, but it has evolved to meet the audience in the current year.
Episode two is the biggest example of this. While the angel sisters are on their way to take out a ghost, there’s a joke about weed dispensaries on every other block. Given the fact that weed is illegal in Japan, it’s a joke about the West.
The crass adult humor is also there. At the end of season one, Panty was cut up into 666 pieces. Season 2 starts with the remaining cast collecting the pieces and putting her together. However, one important piece was missing. Panty not being Panty without her extremely high sex drive and how they represent that missing drive is not something I will go into detail about, but I found it hysterical and chaotic.
There isn’t anything the writers won’t turn into an adult situation. This includes the TCGs Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh. They reference the outlandish prices for a singular card and the extremely convoluted descriptions. However, instead of making it an average card game episode with deadly stakes, the show mixes in Panty’s sex obsession by giving her a few cards that reference that while making a nod at Studio Trigger’s favorite item: a drill.
English vs Japanese Audio
The Japanese audio didn’t have a change in cast, the English dub cast did, and it’s pretty good. The localization team did a good job capturing the chaos and banter between the cast without it sounding like they’re trying too hard. However, I do miss Panty’s valley girl accent.
Did It Hit?
The consensus online is that the show is just fine. It’s not for everyone, and that’s understandable. However, so far, it’s been an enjoyable experience for new and old fans.
