The next chapter of the Monsterverse is on the way.  Fans were delighted when the announcement came that the new Godzilla X Kong movie is now in production.  But with that announcement, came the title of the new movie.  The next movie in the Monsterverse is now called Godzilla X Kong: Supernova.  Nothing else in the short teaser was really shown that could be a basis of speculation but the title provides more than enough.  Fans were fast to start speculating.  Given that Godzilla has a rich history of villains and lore, there was a few things that fans pointed out.  Given the title, fans were pointing to a potential villain.  However, this movie needs to do more than bring in a legendary Godzilla villain.  Godzilla X Kong: Supernova needs to start balancing the time between their titular characters.  A combination of a few elements could make this movie as enjoyable as the previous ones.

Something that fans instantly saw in the past two movies was that Kong took much of the screen time.  For Godzilla vs. Kong, it did make sense for Kong to take a little bit more screen time since Godzilla had two films going into this one compared to Kong’s one.  Also, all the courses of action in Godzilla vs. Kong was due to Godzilla’s presence and his actions.  So, even though Godzilla was not seen, he was felt through the whole movie.  That changed quite a bit in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.  Kong was heavily in it while Godzilla was kind of just there.  Destructively there but just there.  After Godzilla’s use in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, fans started to crave more for the King of the Monsters.  And that’s something that Godzilla X Kong: Supernova needs to address.  Godzilla needs to have a similar arc to what Kong had in the previous movies.  Or at the very least, just have a longer screen time with heartful moments.  Kong had a lot of those moments while Godzilla was just shown as a destructive force.  Godzilla: King of the Monsters and some snippets in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire showed that he does have some emotion and people have emotion toward him.  Godzilla X Kong: Supernova needs to show more cool moments with Godzilla but also give him those emotional ones as well.  For being as popular as he is and crucial to the Monsterverse, it feels like he’s slipping into the back so Kong can get more screentime.  Now that Kong has had a respectable arc over the last two films, Godzilla needs to step back into that role.

But the biggest topic of conversation about the new film is the potential threat that Godzilla and Kong will have to face.  Given that the term supernova is related to the cosmos, many were quick to speculate that the villain will come from the stars.  A few of Godzilla villains are in fact extraterrestrial.  The biggest one being King Ghidorah who has been used and confirmed to be from space.  The enemy that many of pointed to is SpaceGodzilla.  His existence has been sort of hinted at in cut material for the Monsterverse.  In cave art depictions, there seems to be something from the Godzilla species that fans have speculated could be the Monsterverse’s version of SpaceGodzilla.  On the Toho side of the character, space was part of SpaceGodzilla’s birth.  Part of Godzilla’s DNA were sucked into a black hole and it later produced SpaceGodzilla.  Put all those factors together, SpaceGodzilla’s introduction to the Monsterverse seems plausible.

SpaceGodzilla though is not Godzilla’s only extraterrestrial enemy.  Gigan and Orga also come from the stars.  Gigan also has significant history with the King of the Monsters.  He was the first one to ever make Godzilla bleed on screen on the Toho side.  And Gigan has teamed up with Ghidorah, who again has already been introduced.  So, it makes sense for Gigan to be the main threat of the film.  Orga gets his birth due to aliens having interest in Godzilla’s DNA.  Those aliens have been on Earth for thousands of years and once awakened, quickly put their sights on Godzilla.  After getting Godzilla’s DNA, they made of version of him via Orga.

But if the film does get a classic Godzilla villain, the one that makes the sense is SpaceGodzilla.  When Godzilla did take on SpaceGodzilla for the first, he did need help from Moguera, a robot created by a counter-Godzilla agency.  So, history does say that Godzilla does need help to take out SpaceGodzilla.  Kong does make a viable ally against that type of threat.  If SpaceGodzilla is in fact the villain, his origins do have to change.  Again, he was birthed due to some of Godzilla’s DNA traveling to space.  That type of scene has not happened in the Monsterverse.  It would be interesting to see what the film will do to honor that while changing his origin to what has already happened in the Monstersverse.

The Monsterverse continues to live on.  Because of the movies, the giant monster movie genre is here and always entertains.  Seeing Godzilla and Kong clash and take out more giant monsters on their own is always fun.  Seeing them take on threats together brings another level of enjoyment.  Godzilla X Kong: Supernova has potential to showcase more of Godzilla’s lore and to expand it.  That could very well lead to the inclusion of SpaceGodzilla.
