After years of anticipation and teases, the MMO “Throne and Liberty” is finally being released in American and Europe. As the newest MMO on the block, it is all the rage right now but there is some skepticism surrounding it. This post will give a quick overview of the Throne and Liberty, then go over some the pros and cons of the game as player are seeing it for the first time.

Overview

Throne and Liberty was officially fully-released and free-to-play on October 1st, 2024 on Steam, Xbox, and PS5, but many players opted to buy the deluxe edition which allowed them to begin playing on September 26th. Set in a medieval world with magic and monsters, players begin their journey in a peaceful city outskirt as the begin their character leveling progression. As the players gain more levels and complete quests, they begin to enter an increasingly dangerous world. All this to claim an empty throne that has been abandoned and continuously fought over by man, but another darker entity is looking to do the same.

Pros

One of the biggest pros of Throne and Liberty is non-traditional class system. Characters are not created as a certain class, but instead characters can be made into any class a player wants. The weapons a player wields decides their class and each character can wield two different weapons – tanks might wield a sword and shield as well as a great sword; healers could wield a staff as well as a wand and tome; or faced-paced damage dealer would likely use daggers plus hand-crossbows. Whatever a player wants to play like is possible in Throne and Liberty, so long as they pick the correct weapons for their playstyle.

Another pro is there is a variety of gameplay options. Play with friends and conquer the dungeons around the vast world; join a guild and fight in big 30 vs 30 player guild battles; or immerse into Throne and Liberty’s world by completing all the quests. Any player can do all of this and more while leveling and at max level, where even more content is unlocked.

Lastly, Throne and Liberty is set in the same world as the Lineage 1 and 2 games, making it effectively Lineage 3 with a different name. This means it has a proven track record of decent content in the MMO genre.

Cons

While it is too early in this game’s to give a lot of criticisms, there are a few things that already stand out on as not so good. European servers are considerably worse than North American servers. This makes the game nearly unplayable for people in Europe. This severely hurts the potential player base for this game and the Steam reviews. While this issue will be fixed in time, the damage may have already been done for European fans.

Another potential con, Throne and Liberty is developed by a Korean studio (NCSOFT) and published in America and Europe by Amazon Games. This combo has a track record of really great releases but terrible longevity and ongoing live operation. The MMOs New World and Lost Ark were both published by Amazon Games in recent years and are already nearing extinction in North America and Europe despite them both having plenty of new content. Only time will tell if Throne and Liberty will share the same fate.

The final con is a lesser one – some players have an issue with the combat, claiming it does not feel as smooth as other MMOs. This may be a non-issue considering Throne and Liberty is still very new and player are still getting accustomed to the systems.

Other than these potential issues that will likely be remedied sometime in the near future, Throne and Liberty is looking like a great new MMO to try out for free. See you in the Throne and Liberty world!
