Star Wars: The Bad Batch Final Season Trailer

No one needs to explain why the Galactic Empire stinks, but it’s still entertaining to see Star Wars give us new examples of why it does. Case in point: the last season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch ended on a bleak note. The Clone Troopers are being forced out of the Empire they (unwillingly) helped create. Omega and Crosshair are being held prisoner by the Empire. Worst of all, Tech, the member with the most character development that season, seemingly gave his life to save his brothers. Now, it’s looking more and more like the story of Clone Force 99 will end in tragedy. Thankfully, Star Wars fans don’t have to wait much longer to learn their ultimate fate. A recent trailer released on YouTube and Twitter gave fans a sneak peek at The Bad Batch’s upcoming third and final season and a release date.

As shown in the trailer, the Bad Batch, now down to Hunter and Wrecker, is in bad shape. Haunted by the loss of Tech and hunted by the Empire, the two have only one goal: find Omega and get her back. To do that, though, they will need help. Footage in the trailer suggests that Hunter and Wrecker will be receiving assistance from the multiple allies they have made throughout the series. Two characters that are confirmed to be returning are Captain Rex and Echo. At this point in his life, Rex’s primary goal is to save as many of the Clones as possible from whatever dark fate the Empire might have planned. In addition, Echo, who had previously served with the Bad Batch, left them to help Rex with his mission. This was a big deal, leading Tech to get more focus as he helped Omega come to terms with Echo’s departure. While it’s already known that Rex will live until at least after the Battle of Endor, the fates of Echo and the rest of Bad Batch remain in the air.

In the trailer’s final moments, though, the show dropped its biggest reveal of who would be returning: fan-favorite Asajj Ventress.

For those who haven’t watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Asajj Ventress is a Nightsister who found herself becoming a stranded Jedi’s Padawan before his death. That led to her following the Dark Side and becoming Dooku’s assassin/apprentice. She fought numerous Jedi throughout the Clone Wars and got so good that Sidious thought she was a threat to him. Thus, Dooku abandoned her to die; it didn’t work, and, to make a long story short, her attempts at revenge led to Dooku all but wiping out the Nightsisters. Now, without any home, she wound up becoming a bounty hunter.

While Asajj Ventress is a fan-favorite character, and her return is more than welcome, there’s a problem: she’s supposed to be dead. In the 2015 novel Dark Disciple, Ventress aided the Jedi in a plan to assassinate Dooku and end the war. However, the plan went sideways when the Jedi assigned Quinlan Vos came close to falling to the Dark Side, and Ventress had to pull him back. Alas, this final act led to her death at the hands of Dooku. Anakin and Obi-Wan personally laid her body to rest on Dathomir with the rest of the Nightsisters. So, how is she still alive?

According to the Star Wars website, Ventress’s appearance in the Bad Batch will not retcon the Dark Disciple events but will align with them. Whatever the means she came back, it must be one heck of a story.

Plenty of fans will likely tune in to see the final season of The Bad Batch if only to learn how Ventress is back from the dead. That and the ultimate fates of Omega and the other Bad Batch members remain in the air. Will they keep fighting the Empire, retire to a peaceful planet, or see some dark fate overcome them? The fact that we don’t know only makes this final season all the more enjoyable. The final season debuts with a three-part premiere on February 21st, 2024 on Disney+.
