The show begins with three people who are unlikely to become a trio: a washed-up theater director, an ex-TV show star, and a millennial artist trying to find her way in life. Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) find themselves in a sticky situation in the heart of Manhattan: the death of a neighbor in their building.
These true crime junkies don’t believe their neighbor’s death was a suicide, so they take investigative matters into their own hands. Oliver, Charles, and Mabel dive head first into producing a podcast to bring the truth of murder to light.

When I discovered that Steve Martin was a writer and producer for the show, I knew that there were going to be many funny moments. Still, I never anticipated him and Selena Gomez to have so much chemistry on camera together.
THE SHOW
Only Murders in the Building first launched in August of 2021. The series leverages cross-generation appeal and flaunts a delightful trio.
Martin Short and Steve Martin play off of each other quite well on screen. Their connection with the strong actress skills of Selena Gomez made the show come off as seamless. The show’s storyline can seem a bit jumbled at first, but as a murder mystery, it is designed that way. Their silly yet sharp dialogue brings pleasure across generations. Small clues throughout each episode keep the Sherlock Holmes in you, begging for more.
This light and somewhat topical series makes the time fly by while keeping viewers engaged. Sometimes, the jokes make you chuckle and shake your head, while others cause belly laughs. I wouldn’t call this series earth-shattering, but I would call it fun and recommend it to anyone.
This Hulu Original scored an 8.1/10 on IMDB. It simultaneously reached 98% on the Tomatometer and a 90% audience score prospectively.
MY THOUGHTS
Overall, I really enjoyed Only Murders in the Building.
The show gives an excellent feel for life in New York City. It depicted the dynamic between Millennials and Boomers while taking us through an adventure of investigation. The writers and producers kept surprising us with twists and turns throughout the mysteries of each episode and season.
Oliver Putnam, Charles Hadge-Savage, and Bloody Mabel were charming, fun, and kept me entertained. Each cringy joke between the Millennials and Boomers kept me laughing. As a millennial, it truly hit home because I’m familiar with the dynamic myself! This show will reach many viewers and will keep you wanting more.
This Hulu Original reminded me how intriguing and entertaining murder mysteries are. It has awoken my inner Hardy Boy, which has me impatiently waiting for the final episodes of season 3.
