Chances are that if you’ve been on the internet recently, you’ve seen some hype surrounding BBC’s series Ghosts. From fancams of characters to videos of the best bits, everywhere I looked, Ghosts was being talked about. I decided to take the plunge and do what everyone recommended to do, and watch Ghosts.
What is Ghosts about?
Ghosts follows the protagonist Alison and her husband, Mike, who is a young couple strapped for cash. They think their luck has changed when Alison inherits Button House, a large estate slowly falling into disrepair. What the couple doesn’t expect is for their home to be filled with ghosts throughout the ages – from the first caveman to a politician with a scandal.
The ghosts of the house aren’t exactly keen on their new housemates, so attempt to scare the both of them away with little success. However, one ghost does succeed in some capacity, as Alison is pushed from the window. From her near-death experience, Alison can then see the ghosts. At first, she tries to ignore the ghosts, but due to their constant badgering, she is forced to confront them. The couple can’t leave due to finances, and the ghosts themselves are bound to the house for eternity. The series follows the couple, and the ghosts, through their various schemes.
Is It Worth Watching?
There are three seasons, each with six episodes each (apart from specials, such as Christmas). I binge-watched the first season and am already eager to start the second season. It started as a light watch, however, the series had several moments which really tugged at my heartstrings. These were scenes that can’t be shared for the sake of spoilers in this article, however, it gave the series an additional touch that kept my attention more than most other comedy series. Admittedly, the first episode didn’t grip me, but by the time I got to the fourth, I was completely hooked and ready to start the next series.
Something else people may notice is the cast, being mostly from the Horrible Histories series that many people may remember. As every ghost is from a different historical period, each cast member fits their role perfectly. Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe also play the young couple really well and have a great dynamic on screen.
All in all, is it worth the watch? I would personally say yes. I enjoyed the first series greatly, and I would agree that it has gained the hype it has online for a solid reason. It’s made me laugh, it’s made me tear up, while still being light and amusing.
