Synopsis:

Two days after the dance, Maya and Anna reluctantly go to a lame pool party; a crush unexpectedly shows up, causing them to question their sanity and reputations.

Season 2 of Pen15 is FINALLY back, and it’s still as funny as ever. Already, we got many 90’s throwbacks and everyone is growing up.

With a bang, we get our first 90’s throwback. Remember the game, MASH? Where you find out where you’ll live, who you’ll marry, how many kids you’ll have, etc, etc. I used to play this game all the time with my sisters and my friends, and it made me so happy to see Anna and Maya playing this over the phone. They briefly talk about Sam, and it broke my heart that Maya thinks Sam is a psycho. Ok, it was weird that he pretended to be someone else, in order to get Maya’s attention, but they have such great chemistry. He’s the only boy that has feelings for Maya, and truely gets her, and she can’t even see it. Of course she’s too busy gushing over the popular boys. The girls talk about a pool party that they’re going to, and we get a horrific scene of Anna’s mom slathering Nair all over Maya’s body. They definitely went overboard, and I’m surprised that Maya’s mom would let her Nair her body in the first place. When I was their age, I was learning how to shave, and hadn’t even thought about playing around with Nair. Afterwards, Maya is singing “Slob on my Knob,” by Three 6 Mafia, and I totally forgot about that song. Weirdly, everyone was into that song back then, and for being in middle school, it’s just funny how teenagers listen to the most inappropriate songs ever. Of course, we didn’t really know what the rappers were talking about, but the song was catchy.

Arriving at the pool party, we get another throwback of Will Smith’s “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” and then everything just turns cringey. We get a glimpse of everyone, and how they have gotten older, which was kind of endearing, because of course, in real life, Maya and Anna are adults, but their co-stars are still maturing. What I loved, was that the actor who plays Sam, looks so much older, and his voice got lower. It just sucks that he’s not really friends with Maya and Anna anymore. But what the two had been waiting for, was that Brant showed up to the party. He was the guy that got to second base with them at the dance, and of course, now they’re feeling giddy about it. And like all things between boys and girls, their idea about what happened, dawned on them very differently. Brant obviously didn’t think it was a big deal and wanted to deny it in the first place, and the girls feel like they are wanted now. And sadly, that isn’t the case. I just felt horrible for Brant the entire time. The girls wouldn’t leave him alone, and it brought me back to middle school because back then, people wouldn’t give things a rest. They had to poke every rumor or major event with a stick, till it exploded. And in this case, Maya and Anna had to validate that they did go to second base with Brant.

Back at school, we see the return of Alex, who for some reason is talking to the girls, but things end on a sour note when Jenna talks to them about the rumors spreading of them having a three-way, and grinding on multiple boys at the dance. She says that everyone is calling them desperate sluts, and that’s gotta hurt. All Maya and Anna wanted, was to get attention from boys, and their desperation led them down a bad road. Now they’re going to have to prove that they’re not sluts, and mend old relationships. This episode gave me, all the same feels from last season, but it left me wanting more. I missed seeing the girls talk with Sam, and I’m excited to see what obstacles and new life experiences they come upon this season.
