As of June 16, 2020, Emerald City Comic Con organizers have made the difficult decision to cancel its 2020 event. This news comes as no surprise amid the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the Seattle area where confirmed cases and deaths continue to rise. Still, this is a disappointment for those who were excited for this year’s convention.
ECCC, which annually hosts around 100,000 fans, would essentially act as a living petri dish under pandemic conditions. Even if thermal scanners were used and masks were worn by everyone in attendance, there would still be a high risk of infections — younger fans would be especially at risk in such an environment. So, how is ECCC planning to work around all this?
The convention organizers have announced that a digital event will still be happening in lieu of the physical show. This will be the second digital “show” the convention has hosted, but there’s no doubt that this second one will be better and more effective in terms of bringing in fans to connect with creators and exhibitors due to the amount of time showrunners have to organize everything this time around.
Con-goers can expect their tickets to be automatically refunded by June 29, 2020. No further action is required.
While everyone at TGON is mourning the cancellations of our favorite cons, we are excited to see how this new digital platform transforms the convention circuit.
