Every year Disney Channel releases a bunch of TV movies that are sometimes a hit and sometimes a miss. And sometimes they get sequels. Or even two sequels like the Descendants series. And Z-O-M-B-I-E-S will soon follow after with the cliffhanger they dropped in this movie.

We begin Zombies 2 with another history lesson that goes back even further than the incident with the factory. In the earlier days of Seabrook, settlers fought off a group of werewolves from a stone that contains an unknown energy source. The settlers used it as their main power source and it now lies hidden deep beneath the power factory. In the present time, some time has passed since Seabrook and Zombietown came together and some positive changes have been made. Only Bucky still holds some grudges. During cheer camp, he divides the cheerleaders into two groups: the A-team and the Z-team with the latter consisting out of new people, zombies and people who accept zombies. He wants to become the school president, the leader of the winning team could become cheer captain. Their final challenge is an obstacle course which is won by the Z-team.

When the bus is on its way back, Zed has a brilliant idea to ask Addison to the Prawn. Along the road, he has hung up signs to ask the big question, but he is too late and the bus crashes into the nearby forbidden forest. Addison goes into the forest to find Zed but is greeted by a group of werewolves and werewolf Willa howling to the moon. Short after she is found by Zed, punches him again and tells to all the cheerleaders about her encounter with the werewolves. Meanwhile, the local werewolves are getting sick. They have moonstone necklaces which give them the werewolf abilities, but they are losing their power; without them, they die. A prophecy states that a girl with white hair, called the Great Alpha, will show them where this moonstone is. Because they saw Addison in the woods, they begin to suspect that she is the Great Alpha.

Back in Seabrook, the entire town freaks out and the mayor reinstates the anti-monster laws. This means that the zombies cannot go to Prawn. Zed realizes if he runs for president, he can change those laws for the zombies. During this first debate, the werewolves enter the school to take Addison, but the football team protects her. To get closer to her, the werewolves enroll at Seabrook High. When the werewolves are in Zombietown. Zed tries to get the werewolves to vote for him to win the election, but they do not see the point of changing who they are to fit in. At cheer practice, the werewolves join in. Eliza suspects that werewolf Wyatt has a thing for Addison and Zed and Addison get into a fight because of it.

The werewolves eventually bring Addison to their den, where they tell her the prophecy, and Addison accepts it and changes her style into something more werewolf-like. Because of a misinterpreted text to Bree, Zed, Bree, Eliza, and Bonzo track down Addison to the wolf den. Zed thinks she is in danger and loosens his Z-Band but the moonstone necklaces cause his band to be removed completely and he goes full zombie. Addison puts on his Z-band again and tells him she wants to be there and that she has finally found her pack. The werewolves give her a full charged moonstone necklace, which they have saved for the Great Alpha. If she puts it on and is truly a werewolf. Zed protests this and doesn’t want her to become a monster since he knows what it’s like. The werewolves give Addison a day to decide. Then they feel an earthquake as the explosions for the destruction of the power plant are tested. Addison notes that the building is fueled by a mysterious energy source and if the power plant gets destroyed, it will crush and destroy the moonstone along with it.

The next day, Addison finds Zed and tells him she is going to put on the moonstone. This means she will miss his presidential debate against Bucky. When Zed hugs her she doesn’t notice that Zed takes the moonstone from her. When she realizes this in front of the werewolves they are very disappointed that she could lose such a precious item. During the debate, Zed wins over the humans, but when his Z-band shorts out due to Addison’s moonstone, Zed becomes a full zombie and he loses the election.

Meanwhile, the werewolves head to Seabrook Power to find the moonstone, but they trigger the alarm and the Zombie Patrol shows up. The werewolves are arrested and kept in order by silver gas. Addison arrives with the cheerleaders and can stop the demolition for now. They all go outside to celebrate when Zed reveals to Addison that he took the necklace from her. She gets mad at him and puts on the necklace, but finds out that she’s not a werewolf. The power plant does get destroyed as the remote control shorts out. The werewolves become even sicker because of this. When Zed visits them in the den later, he is proud that they do not change who they are.

When Prawn night comes around, the zombies and werewolves show up, regardless of the anti-monster laws. Zed and Addison make up. Then the ground starts to shake and splits in half, revealing a tunnel that leads to the moonstone. The werewolves go into the hole to find it, with the humans and zombies behind them to help. They try to get the moonstone out when a huge boulder blocks their exit. Zed removes his Z-band and uses his zombie strength to lift the boulder and allows the others to bring the moonstone out safely. The werewolves charge their necklaces and Zed and Addison share their first kiss. Later, a blue glowing rock falls from the sky at night. This causes Addison’s radio to briefly short out. When she wakes up her hair glows bright blue for a short moment.

I think that this movie was a lot better because than the previous. Where the first movie was very cliché, this movie was less focused on the relationship between Zed and Addison and the relation between humans and zombies. But more about finding a place where you belong and that you should be proud of who you are and don’t change yourself just because someone else thinks you should change. I like the addition of the werewolves, but some lines in the movie were too cringy and even too offensive to be funny. Like the ‘that dog ate my homework’ line and Wynter getting scratched behind her ear. I also think they could’ve given Wynter more time to shine in the movie, especially during the songs.

I found the songs much better and catchier than the previous movie, with the werewolf songs being the best.

I think it’s a very nice movie, but it remains to be a Disney movie, including some plot holes or things that just happened without explanation. For a 1,5h movie, a lot happened, maybe even too much. But with Disney’s love for trilogies and the cliffhanger, maybe more will be explained during Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 3. I give this movie 4 out of 5 moonstones.
