Hello! We are back again with episode three of Pennyworth titled Martha Kane!
Alfred goes to Esme’s father to ask for her hand. But he thinks that his daughter only likes the animal inside of Alfred (because he killed people during the war). He thinks he knows that it’s true because her mother had the same thing. Because Alfred comes from a family of servants without proper education, Esme’s father cannot give his permission for marriage and will disown her if they would. Alfred then walks away angrily. Alfred goes back to the Velvet Rope, where Esme finds him. Alfred starts to have second doubts about their future together and didn’t know that Esme comes from such a wealthy family. Eventually, Esme gets so angry that Alfred sort of agrees with her father that she storms away and leaves her engagement ring behind.
Somewhere else in London we meet Ian Thurso, the inventor of one of the first computers. He secretly went to the shop to get groceries and thinks that no-one saw him. But he was still spotted as the police come to the door minutes later. Back in the pub, Alfred is approached by Martha Kane. She saw his advertisement in the newspaper and wants to hire him as a driver to escort someone to the airport. And she is willing to pay him big. When Alfred arrives at her hotel the next day, the lets him drive to the police station. There Alfred learns that the man Alfred needs to drive is already under arrest and Martha wants to talk him out of there. She pretends to be his lawyer and gets him out of there. But Ian doesn’t want to get out of there without his boyfriend. The chief of police finally agrees and lets them take the two men out of there. After going back to his house, they go to the Airforce Airport. There Martha reveals that she works for a society called the No Name League. Then some people of the Raven Society arrive because they could use Ian and his skillset. They destroy the lights on the runway so that the plane is forced to cut off it’s landing. Alfred convinces the people of the Raven Society that if they won’t leave, he will kill Ian and Martha will destroy the computer. Since the plane is not landing, Ian will never leave the country and they could try another moment to gather them. They leave the Airbase, but Alfred suspects that they will create an ambush further down the road. Alfred has another (crazy) idea to still let the plane land. He makes a hole in a trucks fuel tank and uses the gas to create a new line of light when Martha sets fire to the gas. The plane can land and Ian and his computer get on it. Ian’s boyfriend initially stays behind, but he also chooses to get on the plane.
Sometime later, Martha gives Alfred his payment and he agrees to work for her more, as long as it only includes driving. From this money, he rents a car. When he gets home with it, his father gives him credit for his progress in his own business, but he also worries that Alfred now might think that he is good enough for Esme. Alfred gets pissed on his father that he scared Esme away on purpose. He gets rid of his car and rends an apartment instead. He takes Esme to this place and gifts it to her, although if she wants to he could live there too. Although she is still confused to why Alfred left her. Yes, she was the one to leave her ring and walked out of him, but he never tried to stop her from leaving. Alfred got scared that the animal inside of him is the only thing what he contains and that there is nothing inside him that could deserve her. Even though, he still asks her back.
In the Velvet Rope, Bazza plays a game of poker when a drunken Dave comes in and ruins the game by making a scene. One of the other players gets so fed up with it that he grabs a gun and points it at Dave. He isn’t impressed and easily disarms the man. When Dave throws the gun back to the man, he catches it wrongly and the gun goes off, shooting the man in the head. Bazza calls someone to clean up the body and leaves Dave with his thoughts after a falling out. But Bazza changes his mind and comes back for him.
Lord Harwood is still being tortured in the Tower of London. He does know that the prime minister will fall sooner or later and the country will rise in his name. Because he still doesn’t want to give proper answers he is sent to ‘The Barber’. Sometime later, he is dumped somewhere around London with half of his nose missing.
