It can feel like the best club that we will ever be a member of. Being a geek, nerd, enthusiastic, whatever you want to call it, isn’t about claiming what’s rightfully ours, it should be all-inclusive. And if we’ve got friends that we want to introduce to the inner sanctum, it’s going to take more than an episode of Gotham to get them initiated. While we can feel that it’s something that is rightfully ours, especially when our close friends don’t particularly get what we do, we’ve got to find a way to get them involved. What are the best ways to do this?

Initiate Them In The Human Aspects Of Geekdom

From the outside, geekdom consists of Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and so on, it can seem like literally an alien concept! But rather, it’s the most subtle nuances of shows like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica that can fit so seamlessly into to politics, human interaction, pain, suffering, all of the veritable human aspects of living. If this doesn’t work, pointing out how much of our worldly culture is influenced by supposed “geeks”. Look at the article What is Virtual Reality? to get an interesting history of the pioneers of digital interface, and this provides a more sympathetic entryway for those that believe them to be pointless.

Help Embrace Something Different

Whether it’s a social activity like Warhammer, going to a Comic-Con, or just sitting down for a marathon of Star Trek Voyager, we can help our loved ones to embrace a certain sense of geekiness. It’s different, and this means it’s unique. If we encourage our close friends to get an understanding of our passions in life, it can help them understand who we are better. Whether this is a sibling, boyfriend or girlfriend, or even your parents, helping them to embrace something that is unique could even help them to find a new identity.

Ease Them In With The Right Works Of Art

If there is a reticence towards comic books, perhaps Batman: Year One is a perfect entryway? From there, you can relish in introducing them to the MCU. Consider this an opportunity to go back to the start, and remember when you first fell in love with your favorite comics, artists, and superheroes. It’s far from an outsider thing now, as evidenced by the number of popular figures in entertainment that hail comic books as an inspiration. Sometimes, to win the battle, you have to point out it’s very likely that one of your friend’s favorite musicians is a geek at heart.

While you may think it’s something you want to be close to your chest, you should share, and be proud of who you are. Introducing your friends or loved ones to the geeky life can be a perfect way to share something that you love with the people you love. It’s not just a hobby, but it’s a way of life. And you never know, giving them that entry point can make all the difference.
