Okay, so it’s more of a count up, but details, details. Since the announcement was made that Supernatural’s 15th season will be its last, I find myself feeling nostalgic. So, for the next 14 weeks I’ll be posting and writing about the five (in my opinion) best episodes of each season. This is by no means a definitive list, nor is it in any particular order, but I will fight anyone who tries to argue that these are not the best of a very long, very beautifully painful show.

So. Season five is widely touted as the best season of Supernatural. It’s understandable, since the shows creator originally wrote a five season arc (which, given the time and issues with networks, was an optimistic goal). Little did he know that the show would live one for an additional TEN YEARS! This was another tough one, but here are my personal top five episodes of season five:

SEASON 5

1.) The End

Dean is resisting the fate Heaven has bestowed upon him. Zachariah does what he does best and sends Dean to a future in which the human race is basically wiped out. Sam is Lucifer, Cas is human, and toilet paper is gold. Watching this episode in… well honestly any year after 2013 is great, but seeing the cold vengeful person Dean becomes is pretty harrowing.

2.) Changing Channels

This is The Trickster at his finest. the teasing of other genres and the silliness of the entire episode is hilarious, from Doctor Sexy to the Nutcracker… and still it manages to bring everything crashing down when we learn that the Trickster is actual the Archangel Gabriel, and the whole episode was to force the bros to fight.

3.) Abandon All Hope

Okay, I was a bit late to the Supernatural game (my dad bugged me to watch it from season one, but I was my own person. whatever), but when I heard there was hate for Ellen and Jo, I couldn’t believe it. They were amazing. I felt like, in season 12, the writers wanted to bring Ellen back, but had to bring Mary instead, and so made her fit that mold. The bad ass mother/daughter hunting duo meet there end here, and even though I know a lot of other shit happens, nothing matters more than Jo and Ellen.

4.) Point of No Return

Cas has lost faith in Dean after finally falling, Dean has no faith in Sam, and suddenly a rando (but not) brother comes into the mix. it all adds up to some amazing character work all around and heightens the tension both between Dean, Sam, and Heaven, but between Dean and Cas, the latter of the two throwing millenia of life away to throw in with the Winchesters. It’s a lot, and i will watch it on repeat fo-eva.

5.) Swan Song

Swan Song might be the best episode of Supernatural’s entire run. Not sure of they were getting another season, and having written the show as a five season arc, it’s understandable why some people stop after this love story to itself. Sam saves the world, and Dean is there with him at the end. He forces himself to move on, but the resolution is sad and intentionally half-hearted. If the show had ended here,I wouldn’t complain… but ti didn’t and so we get ten more YEARS of awesome content to go through!!

Honorable mentions:

Dark Side of The Moon, My Bloody Valentine, Two Minutes to Midnight.

Honestly, I could write a whole post just about Dark Side of The Moon, but season five was so full of awesome episodes, I had to narrow down to (in my opinion) the best. What are your favorite season five eps?
