Chuck said it best: Endings are hard.
After 15 years of saving people and hunting things, the Winchester boys are firing their last rounds, burning the last remains, closing up the family business, and parking Baby.
In an emotional video, show leads Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins broke the news to fans who, although have known that eventually the show would have to end, are still heartbroken to hear it coming so soon.
“We just told the crew that even though we’re very excited to be moving into our 15th season, it will be our last,” Ackles told fans in a video posted on Instagram. “15 years of a show that has certainly changed my life, I know it’s changed these two guys’ lives, and we just wanted you to here from us that though we’re excited about next year, it will be the finale.”
“We’ve cried some tears and we’ll cry some more, but we’re grateful and we’re going to work all that emotion into next season,” added Padalecki. See the full video below.
Supernatural’s final season will consist of 20 episodes, like the current season. The show began as a niche genre show in 2005 and is the only show from the WB (now CW) to still be airing. As sad as it is to think of a world without Team Free Will, 15 is a nice, round number, and it’s rare for any shows to make 300+ episodes, let alone a sci-fi/fantasy.
There is no word yet as to whether the Supernatural conventions (hosted by Creation Entertainment) will continue after the series wraps, but here’s hoping that, without such a demanding filming schedule, the cast’s work/life balance will make conventions possible.
How are you doing, SPN Family? I know it’s hard to say goodbye and let go of something that has held us together and brought so much fulfillment to our lives. I personally have met some of my dearest friends through this show, who have become my family. It’s hard to see it end, but just remember: “Family is there, for the good, bad, all of it. They got your back. Even when it hurts. That’s Family.” Though an institution is ending, our family isn’t.
