2 Dope Queens Returns to HBO with Episode 2 x 3 Review – “Music” (Spoilers!)

Thankfully, finally, after a year of basking in the limelight and generally living their best lives everyone’s favorite 2 Dope Queens are back on HBO with season two of their four-part comedy series. In the third episode, “Music,” Jessica and Phoebe talk about hookup playlists, what Spice Girls they are, and first concert experiences that defined their young lives and helped make them the queens they are today.

First, of course, is fashion. Phoebe brings it in coral with an outfit she describes as “if Solange were a bird” and Jessica shimmers in what she calls a Ziggy Stardust-Game of Thrones-princess-Hunger Games look that leaves her feeling a YA novel vibe. Next, the Queens reminisce about their first concert experiences, which includes a shocking reveal for Phoebe (it’s not, actually. U2) and discussion of how they both adopted monogamy before they every dated and all of the shitty ideas about romance they got from love songs in their teens.

Blessed with two special guests this episode, the Queens welcome Janet Mock first who discusses her success as a do-everything-there-is-to-do woman and passion for Ball culture. Mock describes music that lifts her up and teaches the Queens a thing or two about accepting mid-level awards (nothing too fancy per Jess’s request).

Next, the Queens welcome Lizzo who has a lot of wonderful and funny things to say about which music gave her life, her love of self, and the fact that size does not dictate health – however, she also has an agenda. Lizzo clearly accepted the invitation in order to show haters and non believers that she can definitely play the flute. She does, and teaches Jess and Phoebe a thing or two about twerking while you flute.

Guest comedians this episode include Pat Brown who calls out left-handers for what they “really” are and Rory Scovel who does a whole set about “taking a shit” that resonates as with the challenges of going at work and what one does when they have to go while walking around Manhattan. The entire episode made me laugh out loud as I watched and so far these are my best comedy guests of the season.
