George R. R. Martin’s Nightflyers 1 x 8 – “Rebirth” Episode Review (Spoilers!)

SyFy’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s novella “Nightflyers” continues with episode eight, “Rebirth,” which starts off all action. Rowan and Tessia have a major setback in the baby department and now she, Roy, and doc Tobin have been exposed to an alien contaminant that threatens to infect the ship. Tessia moves around like a champion for someone who has just given birth but as the spore continues to spread she and Roy agree that a lethal decontamination may be necessary.

Mel finds Karl only to learn why he’s been so devoted to the memory suite. She demands that he bring equipment to help save the crew that’s been infected and Karl says he will but he’s said a lot of things recently and is probably going to stay and keep trying to contact the volcryn and alternate reality Sky. Later, when Karl carries Tabitha into the room her powers comes to life and she speaks for the failing Tessia. She tells Roy that they have to run a decontamination sequence that will kill anything organic in the room, including them. Or, some of them!

As the Nightflyer moves within sight of the volcryn, Tabitha’s and Thale’s powers increase in response to the waves of teke energy coming off of the alien vessel. Lommie reveals that she only locked part of Cynthia behind the firewall, and Rowan senses that Lommie knows something and becomes aggressive. More and more, since his relationship began Tessia a really obsessive, dark side of him emerges in the midst of what should be his own horror space love story.

In a last, reckless effort to undo the mess she has made by keeping secrets from the rest of the crew, Lommie enters the crystal again to deal with the Cynthia that is free. As you can imagine, that goes terribly and instead she submits control of her body to Cynthia. Auggie reaches out to Cynthia, loose in the ship, reaffirming his commitment and his willingness to restore her control of the ship.
