Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.
While the previous episode set the gears in motion for Frieza’s eventual revival by freeing him from hell, Episode 94 was anything but that. Outside of one key plot point, everything felt like a massive stalling tactic by the writers until Frieza actually got revived proper by the end of the episode. Here we spent more time with everyone else and their side stories until we finally get to Frieza and Goku. So lets get on with our recap, shall we?
We start the episode with Goku back at Bulma’s house as Bulma, Vegeta and Krillian start asking Goku about Frieza and how they can trust him. They eventually ask him the big one and that is what he promised the evil emperor if they won and well, they figured out that it’s Frieza getting revived fully once more. Everyone objects to this, except Whis who takes Goku’s side and says that having Frieza around seems trivial now that the whole universe is at stake with the Tournament Of Power. Also Goku adds that he and the others can once again stop Frieza easily like they always do.
Elsewhere, Universe 4 and 8 are scheming in the background due to Frieza’s arrival and agree to send over assassins to kill Frieza as he arrives back on Earth in Universe 7. Unvierse 8’s God Of Destruction was actually hesitant in doing this due to if Zeno found out what they are up too, they could risk being erased right then and there. But Universe 4’s God Of Destruction assured him that Zeno won’t find out and that if Universe 7 loses Frieza, then they will be instantly erased before anyone else. Giving them a slight advantage in a way.
Back at Bulma’s house Goku and the others are still chatting away when Trunks walks onto the patio and checks out the board everyone had up listing all of the fighters. Trunks starts wondering why Frieza and 17 are on it, leading Goku and the others to create another lie and tell Trunks that that is for everyone wants to come over for his sisters birth party thingy. Trunks sorta see’s through it and starts asking about Frieza being a bad guy when Vegeta cuts in, swallows his pride a ton and says that Frieza is actually a good guy now. He then spirals into a moment of denial after having saying such things. Goku eventually suggest to Krillian to bring 17 to Bulma’s house and to take both Trunks and Goten with him, 18 and Maron to 17’s Monster Island — And also to make sure the boys take 17’s spot as rangers on the island. Goku on his end, heads off to see Baba and bring back Frieza.
After the break, we’re at Monster Island with Krillian and the others meeting 17. Krillian and 17 have that really awkward brother-in-law moment and 17 even forgets his nieces name, which actually angers 18 a bit. Eventually though Goten, Trunks and even Maron all agree to watch over the island after checking it out while the adults were talking. So with that said 17, 18 and Krillian head back to Bulma’s house.
We also pick up with Master Roshi training one last time before the Tournament Of Power at Korrin’s tower, trying out new techniques that don’t actually attack opponents but instead can trap them and maybe even move them out of the ring. Roshi then stands on the ledge, gives a passionate monologue and is ready to fly off to meet up with everyone else; but well, he suddenly remembers he can’t actually fly asking for Korrin and Yajirobe help on that.
Back at Bulma’s everyone is gathering and getting ready to head off to the Tournament Of Power with just 17, Roshi, Frieza and Goku the last four to show up. First 17 shows up and things are very tense for some odd reason. It becomes apparent that 17 hasn’t seen anyone besides Krillian and 18 since the entire Cell saga happened decades ago. The first person who actually greets 17 is Piccolo, which is fitting, since back in the Cell saga they had a heated battle before Cell interjected and absorbed 17. At first, the writers throw you off and think that they may fight but nope, Piccolo sticks his hand out and shakes 17’s hand, welcoming him to the rest of the Z Fighters finally. Next up is Roshi, who arrives in style with Turtle as his spinning ride. Roshi comments on how much Gohan is starting to become a leader — even if Gohan is wearing nerdy glasses on top of his Gi.
Finally, after much stalling we catch up with Goku at Babas!
Here Goku gives Baba a gift from Bulma, that should cover the cost of having to revive Frieza for next twenty-four hours. The old witch has Goku wait outside as she heads to the otherworld to get the evil emperor. Eventually the air changes and Goku walking inside Baba’s hut, can sense Frieza’s power level arriving. Baba and Frieza materialize inside and immediately Frieza gut punches Goku. Goku returns the favor. Goku then tells Frieza to hold his hand as they instant transmission back to Bulma’s but before they can do one of Baba’s spirits come running in telling the three that there are some strange men outside. And by strange men outside, the spirit means about a hundred or more above them.
Turns out that the pack that Universe 4 and 8 made is set into motion and their hired assassins are now set to attack. But before Goku can ever get answers from the one that looks like the leader, Frieza shoots him dead. Frieza then states that he needs a warm up and begins to power up into his Golden Form. Goku objects and says that there isn’t any time, but Frieza won’t listen at all. As Frieza transforms we’re treated to the last few pieces of the Tournament Of Power arena being built.
As you can see, most of the episode wasn’t even about Frieza and his revival, but instead of 17 and his island. It was a weird bait and switch after last week’s episode hyping up Frieza’s latest revival as a big thing, when it only took about 2 minutes of screen time. A lot of Episode 94 I believe could have been streamed line significantly and we could have gotten that fight of Goku and Frieza against the assassins for a fully episode instead of leaving it on a cliffhanger for Episode 95.
Watch Episode 95’s big fight against the assassins will be over before you know it, no longer then five minutes max and then we’re back to a bit more padding in the episode before the start of the tournament ends on a cliffhanger and we’ll have to tune in for Episode 96, sigh… But hey, I could always be wrong now, fingers crossed!
