The Gifted S02E10 Review and Analysis

The theme of this episode is definitely one of reunions, we not only see Marcos and Lorna reunite, but also Andy and his family. What’s bringing them back together serves as a reminder that though they have extremely different thoughts on action, they are still fighting the same enemies. We begin this episode with a flashback of Lorna, John and Marcos, where they make promises to each other. Which leads to the plot development and an unlikely, if temporary, reunion. Marcos calls Lorna and bargains with her to get information on where the Purifiers have taken john. Appealing to her sense of duty to her fellow mutant and one of her friends.

We have some heartwarming scenes …. to nudge us towards the alluring pull to believe things will end up alright in the end and that tug on your heart strings.

The Gifted is starting the new year with some pivotal moments that occurred in this weeks episode. The last episode left off with John being captured by Jace and the Purifiers. Interestingly, you see Jace Turner actually realize that John is telling them the truth that he and the Mutant Underground were not working with The Inner Circle, and attempted to tell him what the Inner Circle is. Jace realizes that Andy and Lorna had split from the group, but with spectacularly bad timing, they’ve just reunited with the Underground in order to free john.. leading Jace to assume John was playing him the whole time and lying.

We see a reluctant Lauren agree to work with Andy in order to help Clarice rescue John, during their recon they have a conversation that I found to be the most interesting moment of the entire episode. Giving Lauren (and the viewers) a much deeper appreciation, or at least an understanding of the depth of what The Inner Circle is working to prevent. Yes, the Mutant Underground have morality on their side, but their entire manifesto is to help sneak mutants across borders to move them to safety, hide them from authorities. They’re not politically doing anything that changes the current problems. When Lauren questions Andy about the girl who murdered those people at the bank; he explains what was done to her, that through torture and abandonment they broke her, and that that’s what they’re fighting. The people and the system who are creating the Rebecca’s of the world.

After moving John to get him to safety, one of the Purifiers attempts to shoot Lauren, and Andy reacts. This is the first time the Struckers (Andy and Lauren’s parents) see the change that has set in within Andy, this only leads to him being and feeling more alienated from his family, regardless of the bittersweet reunion that they had earlier on. Instead of simply disarming the man or injuring him so that he couldn’t follow. He inflicts pain after pain, breaking bones and making him suffer.

We end with a moment of the Strucker siblings, seemingly simultaneously using their powers, which appear to get stronger every time they’re using them together. Till next week!
