Slight spoilers may be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.

Episode 84 is actually a straight to the point episode and picks up right where we left off last week with Goku flying off to recruit Krillian and his wife, 18. Midway on his flight over to his friends, Gohan decides to join him. Elsewhere Krillian is out on patrol in the city doing his police duty, but thanks to his training that he picked up since the last time we saw him, he’s able to easily dispatch criminals and save the day for ordinary city folks. Eventually Goku and Gohan find Krillian just about to wrap up for the day and make it back to his house to talk to both him and 18 about the Tournament of Power and joining the team.

Goku is able to easily get Krillian into the team after 18 tells him to join. However Goku has a bit of trouble getting 18 to join them, she senses something is up with the way Goku and Gohan are acting — they’re not at all telling the couple that if they lose then they’re wiped from existence! Goku tries to deflect the truth from her and instead makes up a lie that the winners get 10 million zen each, which finally gets 18 to join. However before Goku can get both of them to join from just a handshake and a lie, Gohan wants to test out Krillian’s new power, with his belief being that Krillian is still weaker then what his father, Goku thinks.

Next, we pick up with Gohan and Krillian standing on a few rock formations out at sea with Goku, 18 and 18’s daughter, Marrin watching from a cliffside. Here, under the Tournament Of Power rules which include ring outs, no killing, and no flying, the pair start to spar. Gohan has the advantage for a brief few seconds, knocking Krillian away but Krillian being the crafty of the two jumps up into the air and unleashes a new, yet familiar technique. Here we unveils the times one hundred solar flare! Compared to the normal solar flare that blinds on sight, the one hundred version of the movie can actually blind someone who’s covering their eyes! This gets Gohan off guard as Krillian pops up behind him and knocks him into the water. After Gohan apologies to Krillian for underestimating him and Krillian shrugs it off and tells Gohan that with his brains and Gohan’s strength the two can be a strong team in the Tournament. But this isn’t the end of the episode, Goku challenges Krillian to a sparring session as we head into a commercial break!

After the commercials, we find everyone back in the city and on top of a building owned by Hercule. Here, Goku and Krillian spar on top of a helipad and follow the tournament rules as well. Gohan states that if either of them get out of hand, he’ll stop the match and 18 objects to Krillian even going against Goku right after sparing with Gohan earlier. She worries that her husband is too weak to face someone as powerful as Goku, but Krillian says to not worry and that he has to face someone like Goku for experience. Their rooftop sparring session begins!

Straight away Krillian launches four of his devastating Distructo Discs at Goku, who luckily manages to dodges all of them. Krillian then tries to trick Goku with a solar flare but instead while calling out the move he launches a completely different move which catches Goku off guard. This causes Goku to go Super Saiyan and blasts Krillian, who dodges the attack but blows up half of the helipad. Krillian then hides in the rubble to evade Goku, but eventually gets sensed by him. Goku sends out another ki blast which causes Krillian to get dangerously close to falling off the roof. But Krillian has one last trick for Goku, turns out there was one more Distructo Disc that Goku failed to notice that actually was drilling a hole under his feet! This almost causes Goku to get a ring out but he dodges this and lands on stable ground and switches to his Super Saiyan Blue form.

18 then says to Gohan that Krillian doesn’t have a chance against Goku now and that the fight should end, but her husband persists on fighting with both him and Goku charging up Kamehameha beams which then causes a tug of war between the two friends. Krillian gets on the losing end of it but then suddenly 18 injects herself into the fight, kicking Goku’s hand away from the beams and bringing the tug of war to a screeching halt. She then goes to check on her husband, Krillian who’s been knocked back a few feet and gets him to stand up. The reason why 18 injected herself into the fight is since they are using the Tournament Of Power rules for this sparring session, it is technically a Battle Royal — which is what the real one a few episodes from now will be. The husband and wife duo are both ready to fight Goku but suddenly, Goku calls off the fight and admits that 18 is right. He should have kept his mind focus and prepared to attacks from any direction; completely forgetting about the Battle Royal aspect of the tournament. With the sparring sessions now over, Goku and Gohan congratulate the couple and welcome them both to Universe 7’s team.

Before the episode closes, Goku asks 18 on where her brother, 17 is and she says that he’s now a park ranger and out at some forest. Now all four of them along with Marrin are out looking for 17 as the episode ends with a behind the back view of 17 in his ranger outfit looking over a forest and ocean.

I didn’t have any issues with the episode, outside of just two minor things. Firstly, why does Goku have to fly to see Krillian and 18, when instead he can just instant transmission over to their house to see them? He actually instant transmission to them a few episodes back that kick started Krillian’s new training regimen. So this is a slight inconsistency. The second issue I had is how they just explain 17’s new existence of being alive and well after the Cell saga — which should have killed him alongside Cell. Goku just simple asks 18 on the whereabouts of her brother with 18 simply giving him a 3 sentence repines on what he’s doing, where he should be at and why he’s a ranger — he took a fondness for nature apparently. So it seems like it’s something to just brush under the rug about how 17 came back to life since post-Cell saga and why he’s been MIA from all the important stories since then, compared to 18 who’s been a part of everything major so far. Hopefully they fill in this missing plot hole eventually, but at this rate I’m not holding my breath for it.
