If you were aware of YouTube culture in the early to mid 2000’s, you’ve probably heard of a poet and hip-hop artist by the name of George Watsky. His career blossomed at the age of 15 when he first participated in slam poetry and he continued on to win dozens of slams in his teens.
Watsky’s poetry touches on political and social themes. He even made an appearance in season 6 of Def Poetry Jam in 2006, performing his poem, “V for Virgin”.
From there Watsky, now a student at Emerson College in Boston, continued creating and releasing slam poetry. He was becoming a YouTube sensation. In 2009, The Boston Globe reviewed his one-man show, “Where the Magic Happens” and called him a poetry-slam star.
2009 was also the year he released his first hip-hop album titled, “Watsky” and in 2010 he released “Guilty Pleasures”, which contained mash-ups of popular songs and songs from his first album. From 2009 to 2016, Watsky found himself very busy. With the release of several more albums and going on tour, it seemed like he would never slow down.
However, in 2016 Watsky took a break from making music. His fans weren’t sure when, if ever, they would hear something new. So after he recently released a video announcement that he’s back after a two-year hiatus and with a new song, his fans have been going crazy!
His new song and tour are titled, “Welcome to the Family” and feature Feed the Birds and Chukwudi Hodge. There is one thing that is undeniable. George Watsky is a force to be reckoned with. Make sure to pick up your copy of his latest album and get your tickets for the tour!
