It’s not often that a video game developer’s love for adventure and exploration shines through their Kickstarter page. Seeing the love and passion, like in your Abuela’s Telenovela, is a rarity that needs to be celebrated. It is even more atypical, when the team is still in the process of creating the demo; snapshots and conversations speak volumes. This is why, when I say Peace Island is going to be a smashing success, I say it with conviction and confidence.

There are a plethora of apocalyptic-esk games where the human race has disappeared and it’s up to one man to save the day. Usually, this lone survivor finds himself a few unlikely friends, maybe even a love interest, and defeats the evil villain in one way or another. However, what happens when all the humans have gone? Is there no hope for humankind? Eric Blumrich and Laura Mackey see this scene going down very differently and it involves our feline friends.

Peace Island is located in Maine, and has the most unique perspective I have ever seen. All of the citizens have vanished, leaving their cats behind to figure out what happened. This open world game allows players to explore every inch of the island, interact with other local animals, and decide if they really want to bring their owners back. Gamers get to play as each of the nine cats that all have different personalities and skills, thus each play an important role to the main story line. One can bask in the sun or fight off the invasive species that threatens life on the island. The choice is yours, and yours alone.

After speaking with Eric, it is very clear that he loves what he is creating. He explained that the game was going to go in a much different direction, think Harvest Moon meets Fallout, a veterinarian was coming to the island to replace his predecessor but quickly notices there is no one around. This is where Laura figured out that cutting to the chase, and eliminating humans entirely, was the better approach and honestly, I couldn’t be more thrilled.

I personally adore cats, they are adorable and aloof all while maintaining their stoic demeanor. The idea of exploring this open world game as a cat has me jumping for joy. Aside from that, the graphics are gorgeous. They make you feel the coldness of being alone in this world, but bring little pops of color symbolizing the hope that one day, you’ll find your beloved human. This combined with the realistic weather changes makes for a visually stunning game.

Overall, I am stoked to see how Peace Island will turn out upon its release in early 2020. Any game that I play as a cat and can make friends with a deer, is a game worth waiting for. I encourage everyone to head on over to the Peace Island Kickstarter and fall in love with it, just as I did.
