When I was a kid I would, like all kids do, get grounded. When I got grounded all forms of entertainment was off limits except books so I read a lot. I was in trouble often. I read the Sweet Valley Twins, Sweet Valley High, The Vampire Diaries (It was a book series before it was a show), The Secret Circle (same thing), A Swiftly Tilting Planet, A Wrinkle in Time and much, much more. Those were just my favorites. I couldn’t read enough even when I wasn’t in trouble. These days I still am an avid reader. I don’t have the Sweet Valley books anymore but I still have copies of the others. I still love romance novels and preternatural books as well as fantasy. Here are some of the books I am looking forward to reading.
I had, as it often happens, ran out of stuff to read and asked a friend for recommendations knowing he is a book nerd too and he showed me the Anita Blake series written by Laurell K. Hamilton. I have covered almost the whole series so far in my time at The Game of Nerds. The next book in the series comes out August 7th, 2018 and is called Serpentine. Edward is getting married! I am so excited to read this! Don’t worry; I will have the rest of the series reviewed before it comes out.
The same friend also introduced me to Jim Butcher’s series The Dresden Files. It’s about a wizard who is a P.I. in Chicago. Each book covers a case he is working on. I will be covering this series next. However he just came out with a short story book called Brief Cases. It is short stories about some of his cases. His next full length book is Peace Talks. There is no information besides a title out on it yet. I will introduce him soon.
If you read graphic novels you might have come across a graphic novel series by Neil Gaiman called The Sandman. Yet another friend introduced me to this series. I think I have read the ones I own countless times. I love them. He is also an author of children’s books and novels. One book in particular I want to read and it is sitting in my library as we speak waiting for me is American Gods. It’s about a man named Shadow whose life is turned upside down. A mysterious man who knows Shadow offers him a job. I am bouncing with excitement to read it.
Now I know there is a huge divide on the E. L. James series 50 Shades of Grey. People usually either love it or hate it. I am on the side that loves it. I read the first three books and the three movies. I even covered 50 Shades Freed the movie here on Game of Nerds. I mention first three books. Yes there are more, so far Grey and Darker. They are from Christian’s point of view. I am eager to know what was going through his head during the series.
Another friend of mine introduced me to an author team when I was out of reading material again. It happens to me a lot. This was P. C. and Kristin Cast. They write the House of Night series. It is a fantastic series. However I found that P. C. writes books on her own. One of her series that I love is her Goddess Summoning series. Goddesses trade placed with mortals and confusion and love ensues. The one I have in my grasp to read now is Warrior Rising. Hera, Athena and Venus want to end the Trojan War. So they put a mortal in front of the one man who can end the war. Achilles.
Next on my list is a book I have wanted to read for a long time, A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. It is about a historian who has been trying to keep her magical legacy buried. I just recently found out it is a trilogy. Naturally at the moment I want to read the other two books too. The other two books are Shadow of Night and The Book of Life.
Last but not least I want to read the Cousin’s O’Dwyer trilogy by Nora Roberts. The books in the trilogy are called: Dark Witch, Shadow Spell and Blood Magick (She even spells magick right!). I am very picky about reading books that have magick elements to it because I am a Pagan. Either Ms. Roberts is a Pagan also or she has studied enough to get it right for people who know the subject well. I have read several of her other trilogies that have to do with magick and have been impressed. I don’t expect to be disappointed.
Have you read any of these books? Care to share your favorite authors with me? Let me know in the comments below. Till next week…
