A few weeks back I wrote about reading Gerald’s Game, well this week I am talking about a book that is sort of connected to it: Dolores Claiborne. Dolores Claiborne and Gerald’s Game are connected by one singular event — the eclipse. They were originally going to be combined into one book called In the Path of the Eclipse until it was decided to turn those two stories into novels of their own. The eclipse is talked about in both stories happen on the same day and the day of the eclipse in both stories go on to be important days in the main characters lives.

Dolores Claiborne is about this woman – Dolores Claiborne – who is being accused of killing her boss, Vera Donovan, and is being interrogated by the police. In her story she has to confess to killing her husband back in the 60s. She tells her life story going between the events of working for Vera to killing her husband.

The first thing I need to say about this book is how much I love the way it is written. I listened to the book and the entire thing is just like listening to an older lady telling a story. It is written just like a transcription of a spoken monologue. It was super compelling and it may be because the reader was so good, but holy crap did it keep me wanting to listen to it more. The story in general was good though too.

I would recommend this one, but if you can try to listen to it. I’m rating this one slightly higher than I probably should just based on the performance alone that’s how much I enjoy it.
