Are you scrambling to figure out what to buy your significant other this Valentines Day? Well before you go by Walgreens on your way home from work to browse the half empty shelves, swing by your local comic book shop. Nothing says I love you more than a thought out book recommendation! Valentines Day just happens to fall on New Comic Book Day this year too, so I’m pretty sure this is a sign.
- Tokyo Ghost Vol. 1 by Rick Remender and Sean Murphy – Image Comics
- Okay, so yeah it’s about a dystopian future where everyone relies on technology for almost every waking moment, but at the heart of it is a simple love story between Debbie Decay and Led Dent. While the comic focuses on the steampunk-esque Los Angeles of 2089, it shows just how far people will go for the ones they love. Rick Remender’s writing mixed with Sean Murphy’s art make this a great gift for any valentine who loves the world of RoboCop.
- Violent Love Vol. 1 by Frank J. Barbiere and Victor Santos – Image Comics
- There’s nothing overly special or original about this story but it’s very well written and the art is great. It’s a typical crime/romance or what I like to call a CROMANCE. It’s about a bank robbing couple in the Southwest that has a revenge story sprinkled in for good measure. This kind of flew under the radar for many but it’s finally starting to get the attention it should have while it was being released.
- Batman annual #2 by Tom King, Lee Weeks, and Michael Lark – DC Comics
- Possibly the best comic of 2017 and for good reason. King’s Batman has seen nothing but praise from fans and critics alike and its well deserved. King and Weeks worked together on the one shot Batman and Elmer Fudd that also came out last year and it’s great to see Weeks back on a Batman book. His artwork is flawless and really adds a depth to the story that you didn’t know it needed. The first half of this book follows the beginning of the Batman and Catwoman relationship and the epilogue, drawn by Michael Lark, is a hypothetical look at what might be to come for the couple. It’s a beautifully drawn and written look into the love Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne have for each other that’s sure to not leave a dry eye in the house.
- Saga Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples – Image Comics
- The first issue of this came out SIX YEARS AGO and I’ve just been too stubborn to start reading it until this month. It’s incredible and I feel like a total bozo for waiting so long to read this even though everyone I know kept telling me how good it was. While yes, it is a fantasy driven space opera and there’s a lot going on, it’s a love story between two different alien species. They’re on the run from bounty hunters and simultaneously trying to protect their newborn baby while figuring out their strange surroundings. From the jump, you get a clear understanding of how much the characters love one another and just how far they’ll go to protect their small family. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read this.
- Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life Vol. 1 by Bryan Lee O’Malley – ONI Press
- Would you fight every evil ex your love interest had? Well, Scott Pilgrim did it so we don’t have to. I won’t bore you with the nitty-gritty because I’m sure most people have seen the film based off this first volume. This takes the Meatloaf song to a whole new level and really shows what some people are willing to do for love. Written and Drawn by Bryan Lee O’Malley in a manga style form that fits the video game-esque world that Scott and his foes live in. A goofy tale of love, fighting, and how creepy it is to date a 17 year old high school girl.
