Oscar season is once again upon us, which means that once again I break out my powers of prediction to give you a peek into the minds of The Academy. Here are (who I think will be) the 2018 winners:

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE:
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post

My Prediction: Frances McDormand

If you’re looking for an emotional performance, look no further than Frances McDormand as Mildred Hayes, the mother of a young girl who has been murdered and no suspect has been named on the case. This film explores a really wide range of emotions for a situation utterly unfathomable, and McDormand nails them all.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE:
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
My Prediction: Timothée Chalamet

Sweet & innocent, charming & inquisitive — these characteristics may seem easy to play because they are so…. well… average. But Call Me By Your Name tackles the unfolding of a young boy’s sexual identity. It’s truly amazing to watch Chalamet take on Elio’s inner emotional turmoil and deliver so gracefully on screen.
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:
Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

My Prediction: Laurie Metcalf

Another example of a time when the most common roles are the hardest to play — Metcalf plays the stringent mother to Saoirse Ronan’s Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a wild child at the helms of adolescence. In a role that so many can relate to, Metcalf brings out both the best and worst of parents everywhere, creating a colorful and thoroughly entertaining mother/daughter dynamic.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

My Prediction: Woody Harrelson

Ok honestly, I just really love Woody Harrelson. I think he’s brilliant and he’s constantly taking on big challenges and this role is no exception. I just want him to win an Oscar.

DIRECTOR:
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Jordan Peele, Get Out
Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread
Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water

My Prediction: Christopher Nolan

I mean, this category is practically made for him. And in reality, Dunkirk is quite possibly his best work yet.

Star Wars has always reigned supreme as the cinematic score master, so why should this year be any different?

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM:
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Coco
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent
My Prediction: Coco

These other movies really don’t stand a chance.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
Call Me By Your Name
The Disaster Artist
Logan
Molly’s Game
Mudbound

My Prediction: Call My By Your Name

913

If I’m honest, I would like to see something else win in this category. I would like to see Molly’s Game or Mudbound take it home, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
The Big Sick
Get Out
Lady Bird
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
My Prediction: Get Out

It’s bold, it’s brilliant, it’s important. This was a masterpiece of Jordan Peele’s design, and started right here, in the script.
CINEMATOGRAPHY:
Blade Runner 2049
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Mudbound
The Shape of Water
My Prediction: Dunkirk

This film is built entirely on direction and cinematography. I predicted it will win for direction, and now I’m predicting it will win for cinematography. Hey, can’t hate ‘um for knowing what they’re good at.

BEST PICTURE:

Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

My Prediction: Call Me By Your Name

I think this movie was really solid all around. If not this movie, I think Dunkirk would be the next best bet. I would really like to be shocked and see Get Out win the big bucks, though.

And in the technical categories, I think Shape of Water will win for visual effects (or some other technical category) and makeup, and Baby Driver for sound editing/mixing.

Tell Us: Do you agree or disagree with my Oscar predictions? Who would you like to see win big this year?
