Fresh Off the Boat is at it again with season 4’s 13th episode “The Car Wash” which delivered a balanced, classic episode full of character development and an appropriate amount of 90’s references.

Eddie is mainly mia this episode, spending most of his time obsessing over Spice World and on trips with Nikole to see it. He pops in long enough to spark the car wash storyline with his dad and gets the episode rolling, then at the end to offer older brother guidance to Evan and Emery — the writers nailed him this week and the episode shined for it.

Evan and Emery enter into a feud when Evan is moved into Emery’s English class and theyg both try vying for the approval of their teacher, Ms. Dorris, comedic actress (One Mississippi, Tramsparrent) and Stand Up vet/ Last Comic Standing Alumn Tig Notaro, whom neither can seem to crack. Eventually they discover Eddie was her favorite because he was laid back and they bonded over trash basketball and even took a fun school photo together. This elevates things and drives the boys into a frenzyy of not being themselves (did they not watch last weeks episode about being yourself?), leading to a public fight and detention!?!?!

The boys charm the detention monitor (Alonzo Bodden! Another Last Comic Standing alumn) with their usuual overly polite, helpful tactics and eventually learn the error of their ways.

After planting fear into Louis’ head, Marvin guides Luois through attempts at wooing Jessica and rekindling their passion. The entire plot rolls around the hilarious sentiment that “No one wants to be Chrissie Shrimpton”, Mick Jagger’s ex that was with him througg his start and was ditched when he got famous [Jessica being Mick Jagger with her novel and Louis potentially being Chrissie Shrimpton]. Unfortunately, Jessica’s editor is in town and she is hyper focused on her book and Louis spirals. He tries a bljndfold-abduction-picnic plan, but ends up getting tazed and in a fight which leads him to kidnap her tire, forcing her to ride home with him, where he takes them through a carwash and they have a heart to heart.

Jessica offers the counter argument that they aren’t like Mick and Chrissi, but like Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea Hurley, who were highschool sweethearts and are married to this day. The episode ends with Louis and Jessica playing with the corny, yet somehow fitting, electric fly swatters, bonding, with Marvin voicing approval from his lawnchair 10 feet away.
