Fresh Off the Boat has been on a whole other level with the feels this season, and it didn’t stop with last week’s Nicole centered episode. This weeks episode added multiple new layers to Grandma Huang’s character and we couldn’t be happier.  We are also glad it ended George Takei’s guest run on the series, a spot that was earned but (regardless of recent controversies) his character was just horribly annoying–which isnt just us being mean, since it is a plot point when  Louis goes on a full tangent complaining about him.

This episode naturally corrected the recurring issue of having the family feel disconnected in their storylines by unifying them for the holidays, bit we appreciated the multiple underlying storylines. Ian Chen delivered an impressive range of emotions as Evan after feuding with Jessica about his maturity and then seeing his first rated R movie [he doesn’t handle it well]. His storyline leads to the most hilarious portion of the episode where the Barney balloon gets punctured and then sliced up during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and is forced to relive it when Grandma Huang finds it hilarious and keep re-watching it on a loop.

We do get another hard scene where Jessica and Louis are made to look like careless, selfish people when they loudly complain about their dinner guest (Takei) without realizing he is there and can hear them, causing him to leave and break up with Grandma Jenny. In their defense, he had horrible terrible manners and was on everyone’s last nerve, but everything turns out fine when Grandma admits she was only dating him for the A [which also demonstrates that her and Jessica understand each other and are more alike than previously let on].

Honey and Marvin’s screen time was limited but Honey’s drunken message on the Huang’s answering machine dropped more inappropriate expletives than I remember every hearing on the show, so proper society beware. Unfortunately her message reveals their plot to butter up grandma to utilize her wheelchair for Black Friday shopping and creates a little strife, but it opens up the chance for dialogue between Jessica and her mother in law and we see them openly bond in a rare moment of openness. You won’t easily find better holiday specials and that’s why we are thankful for Fresh Off the Boat.
