The penultimate ever episode of The Mindy Project brought Danny back (the one we know and love, not the one from season 4 who was an ass) to start tying up six seasons of loose ends and guide us towards the finale.
The morning meeting at Shulman is used to announce that Anna is hosting Tamra’s Braby Shower (bridal and baby) because she’s classier and wealthier than Mindy (Morgan’s words). That announcement goes over much better than Jody’s, who takes this time to announce that he’s joining Physicians On The Front to be with Mary and that Colette is going with them. The whole office is piiiiiiiiissed. With Morgan & Tamra going on their honeymoon to Essence Fest soon and then Tamra going on maternity leave, they would be one doctor short and have ZERO nurses. We all remember how terrible the doctors were without nurses during last season’s strike so they’re definitely right to panic.

The other plot-point of this episode is that Danny has found out about Annette’s cancer and the fact that Mindy is hiding it from him. He shows up at Shulman and waits in Mindy’s office for hours just to be able to call her a traitor in Italian and be shitty to her even though she’s helping HIS MA out and respecting her wishes by not telling him. I guess I do still hate him a little, sorry. Anyway he decides that he’s taking over now but Annette still wants Mindy around so they both go to chemo with her, and Dot, and Richie! I’m sort of scared of Richie now because to me he’s the Commander’s chauffeur and Elizabeth Moss’ baby daddy but it’s good to see him and hear all about his time at Leather Week.

They’re watching Gilmore Girls and trying to show Annette a good time while all Danny wants to do is talk about the cancer and how to pray it away. He kicks Mindy out in such a hurtful way that even reaction gifs can’t express. Annette then proceeds to kick him out because he is being such a bummer. Later while they have dinner together, we learn that Danny is just lashing out because he’s scared. Messina gets to do what he loves and does best, which is to be in a very emotional moment and let it guide him. You really start feeling for him, he’s really struggling with his mom’s diagnosis especially given how hard she worked her whole life ti fix everything for him and now he can’t do anything to fix this for her. They have a lovely moment together and honestly it is Emmy worthy for both Rhea & Chris.

Now before the braby shower, Mary shows up to see Mindy, trying to convince her to support Jody’s decision to follow his heart and do something good for once. This hits home with Mindy, she is after all the one who cut off all her hair and moved to Haiti for love. When Jody shows up to the shower, everyone is giving him the cold shoulder but Mindy steps away from the nacho cheese fountain (in her fucking gorgeous dress) to come to his defense. They have all done stupid things for love at this office and their love of hopeless romance has rubbed off on Jody, so they can’t hold it against him and they have to support him. Jeremy doesn’t agree and makes a fuss and leaves. But Anna later makes him realize that he’s mad not because what Jody is doing is bad for the practice but rather because he’s going to miss his best friend. Honestly if I were Tamra I would be so annoyed at these white men for overshadowing my day!

Edward Weeks gets to live out his fantasy of running in the rain to Toto’s Africa, though he’s running towards his male best friend. They make up and Jody even repeats Mindy’s “best friend isn’t a person, it’s a tier line.” Before Jeremy showed up, Jody was talking with Colette, who really didn’t want to go overseas (and even had Morgan shoot her so she didn’t have to) and coming to terms with the fact that they won’t have this adventure together. He also gives her his enormous ass apartment so it doesn’t just sit there for years. Because of this, and the fact that he won’t be getting paid for THREE years, Jody informs Mindy that he has to pull his equity out of Later Baby. Everyone gasps! The business might not survive without that money, so of course he has to throw this at Mindy so close to the end.
Lastly, Danny shows up at Mindy’s apartment on a random night and apologizes to her for being a bitch during the chemo. He now realizes that she’s good for Annette and that they really are family. HE HAS ALSO REALIZED THAT SHE HAS A GOOD EFFECT ON HIM! AND HE TELLS HER! Mindy’s like oohhhhhhh do I now? And then they make love eyes at each other and set the stage for the finale, in which they will probably reunite.
