As a kid, this time of year has always been my favorite for one specific reason — the Halloween movies. These films were special, only to be broken out once a year, and it wasn’t fall without them. Here’s my list of the top 10 best Halloween movies:

10. Scream
Scream is the quintessential scary movie. It’s the slasher film that tops the genre, it’s the horror gem of the 90s! Perhaps it may not be as scary as the new titles coming out today, but it’s just creepy enough to be fun and just nostalgic enough to keep you coming back to it year after year.  (Plus, if you like it you can watch the series on MTV)

9. The Haunted Mansion
Not technically a Halloween movie but I don’t think I’ve seen this movie played any other time of the year — Eddie Murphy battles crystal ball ghosts, walking skeletons, and creepy butlers to save his wife from a terrifying fate.

8. Practical Magic
Again, not technically a Halloween movie but it’s got all the makings of one — sister witches played by celebrity actresses, a dark curse, and a family bond stronger than the forces of evil. I adore this movie, it’s like the Rom-Com of Halloween!

7. Beetlejuice
Does this one even need an explanation? Even if it did I don’t think I’d be able to give it a proper one. Just go watch it, it’s a Tim Burton classic. BEETLEJUICE! BEETLEJUICE! BEETLEJUICE!

6. The Halloweentown Series
This film series was a Disney Channel original and an instant cult classic. Fans young and old return to this series every year because it perfectly captures the spirit of Halloween that we love so much. To this day, I still love going on magical misadventures with Marnie and her family!

5. Casper
This is a movie which I’ve come to appreciate much more the older I’ve gotten. It’s a movie that grows with you. It’s hysterical fun for kids and strikingly emotional for adults, and one that gets better with age.

4. Halloween
It’s in the very title — this slasher horror film is great for a scary movie marathon, and it’s theme song is awesome for Halloween parties!

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas
I hold this film very close to my heart because it’s probably the only stop-motion movie I can actually stand and because it’s a musical. The movie is so much fun to look at, with all the unique setting and character designs, and because it’s such an interesting concept. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve been singing “THIS IS HALLOWEEN!” since October 1st…

2. The Addams Family & The Addams Family Values
I had to put these two films together because I always remember them together. Plus, I couldn’t try to rank one above the other, they’re both too good. These movies still make me laugh, even though I already know all the jokes, and they are perfectly executed. These are a must watch every Halloween season, or honestly anytime.

1. Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is the Halloween movie to reign supreme! It’s witty, charming, and fun for the whole family! And it’s got a musical number! And the entire movie takes place on Halloween night, which makes it the perfect movie. I go as a Sanderson sister practically every Halloween because this movie deserves to be commemorated every year.
