With the new trailer for the next installment in the Star Wars saga released, here’s what we thought about what we saw and some theories about what we might get when the movie releases on December 15th, 2017.
The trailer opens with Kylo Ren overlooking the Hangar Bay of what is presumably his Super Star Destroyer the Finalizer or perhaps it’s Snoke’s mega Star Destroyer, the Supremacy. He seems to be watching the loading of the AT-M6s, otherwise known as the gorilla walkers, into landing craft and we get a good glimpse of them in the next shot.
We hear a voice-over from Snoke, presumably describing finding his Pupil, Kylo Ren. With the next shot having Kylo Ren marching with Storm Troopers mirroring Anakin Skywalker’s march on the Jedi Temple in Revenge of The Sith, we’re clearly given the parallels between the two characters.
Next, the trailer goes from dark to light as Rey comes into focus igniting Luke’s(Anakin’s before him) old blue-bladed lightsaber.
We’re drawn back to the moment she reaches Ahch-To and clearly, she’s not only there to bring Luke back to the resistance but to seek his guidance in the ways of the Force.
After brief cuts of Rey’s training sequences we are given a flashback to a scene we’ve perhaps seen before in the Force Awakens, that of Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren destroying the Jedi Temple only this time from Luke’s perspective. Luke speaks of not having felt someone so powerful since one can guess is his Nephew and the fear it causes him.
We then move forward to Kylo Ren in a moment of frustration smashing his helmet. Then we transition in KR in the cockpit of his custom TIE Fighter, the TIE Silencer. Here we’re given a KR voiceover where he speaks about letting go the past, with images of his TIE Silencer cutting its way through Resistance Forces and his mother General Leia Organa looks on from a Resistance Cruiser.
Next we get our first Glimpse of the Millennium Falcon in the trailer and win that a look at Chewbacca and his new miniature furry friend, a Porg.
On the trailer move to Finn and they give us a look at a fight between Finn and Captain Phasma which is, unfortunately, the second most anticipated confrontation for the next installment of the Series.
Finally, the trailer gives us shots of Supreme Leader Snoke in action and bounces back and forth between Rey and Kylo Ren setting up the final moment of the trailer and perhaps the greatest misdirection of the trailer where Rey asks for someone to show her the ways of the Force and Kylo Ren seemingly offering a helping hand.
A fantastic final tease in building hype in the final two months before the film is released. The trailer generates more questions than answers, and we’ll all get the answers we seek on December 15th.
