The temperature is dropping, there’s already a distinct aroma of pumpkin spice latte in the air, and the supermarkets have started selling Christmas chocolate – which means it’s time to start delving into the gigantic suitcase full of knitwear that I keep under my bed. As a child of the 1980s, I remember a dizzying array of homemade jumpers featuring everyone’s favourite fandoms, from Care Bears to He-Man, but these days you don’t need a keen knitter in the family in order to deck yourself out in some nerdy knitwear.
If Harry Potter is your thing, Truffle Shuffle have some great knitwear, including this unisex Hogwarts Alumni one.
For a more subtle look, you could always go for the classic house jumper, available from the Warner Brothers Studio Tour shop.
For those of us who spent quite enough time wearing a real school uniform, there’s always the option of sporting a scarf or hat in your house colours instead.
Disney fans can get in on the woolly action too, with some classic styles such as this Mickey Mouse jumper from UNIQLO.
EMP are also stocking some Disney knitwear, including this Alice in Wonderland fair isle jumper.
Obviously the peak time for digging out your ugliest knitwear is Christmas, and there are plenty of nerdy festive jumpers for you to wear to your office Christmas party.
And if you prefer a more DIY approach, there are plenty of knitting patterns that will allow you to create some of pop culture’s most iconic knitted items, such as the Fourth Doctor’s scarf or Jayne Cobb’s hat.
Sadly, none of us are Mrs Weasley, and we don’t have the skills to get our jumpers to magically knit themselves, but knitting a nerdy project seems like a great excuse to sit in front of the TV and binge a boxset or two…
